Sistren in Spring City on Saturday

- STAFF REPORT

The intricate harmonies of Sistren, anchored by the guitar of John Rawlston, will entertain the audience at Tennessee Valley Theatre, 184 W. Jackson Ave., in Spring City, Tenn, on Saturday, April 8. Show time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Sistren is the trio of Laura Walker, guitar and vocals; Lori Mast, keyboard, fiddle and vocals; and Kathy Veazey, guitar, keyboard and vocals. Each of the trio has played with different bands in Chattanooga over many years. Walker is a member of The Dismembered Tennesseans, Lori Mast of Skydog and Veazey of Lumbar Five. They are pooling their years of collective experience to give a new take on familiar songs.

Sistren’s music blends gospel, folk, bluegrass and Southern rock. The women came together in late 2008 after running into each other at Nightfall, the summer concert series in

downtown Chattanooga.

“We got to singing along with the song (concert artist) Ruthie Foster was doing — doing a harmony thing and we just got kind of excited about that. It took us a while to finally get together, but we thought we ought to do this more and experiment and see how it came off,” says Veazey.

“We knew a lot of the same music, so it was kind of effortless in that way. It’s just been really fun,” Veazey adds.
