Three UTC music groups wrap up year with concerts
Three musical groups at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will wrap up this academic year with concerts over the next six days. All performances are free.
› Friday, April 7: UTC Choral Scholarship Concert, 7:30 p.m., Second Presbyterian Church, 700 Pine St.
Dr. Kevin Ford will conduct the Chamber Singers and Chattanooga Singers in a concert of Renaissance and 20th-century works, leading to a finale in which all alumni singers will be invited to join the collegians in a performance of Gilbert Martin’s “When I Survey
the Wondrous Cross.”
The Martin work is a staple of Chattanooga Singers’
repertoire from the 1970s to present-day. Chattanooga Singers’ founding director Glenn Draper will conduct the Martin work.
Ford says the first half of the concert will feature Renaissance music such as “Miserere Mei, Deus” by Gregorio Allegri.
“This is the famous work that was part of the treasures of the Vatican,” says Ford. “As the story goes, it was not to be removed from the Vatican, but the child W.A. Mozart wrote it out from memory after hearing it. That story may just be a tall tale, but it has circulated for a couple of centuries.”
After an organ solo played by David Friberg, the second half will include work by 20th-century composers, including three arrangements by retired UTC professor Roland Carter. UTC senior Kayla Petrilli will be the featured soloist on “True Religion.”
› Monday, April 10: UTC Percussion Ensemble’s Catch the Groove, 7:30 p.m., UTC Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St.
The collegians will be joined by the percussion ensemble from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School for this year-end performance, says UTC professor Monte Coulter, director. Audience members will see and hear percussion instruments that are new to them, such as log drums and Earth Plates, as well as standard percussion staples such as cymbals and xylophones,” says Coulter. The program even includes a percussion interpretation of “Flight of the Bumblebee,” arranged by Coulter.
› Wednesday, April 12: UTC Jazz Band, 7:30 p.m., UTC Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St.
Dr. Erika Schafer will conduct 15 musicians in a performance of music by jazz greats such as Tito Puente, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. The program will include “Spain” by Chick Corea, “Billie’s Bounce” by Parker and “Solar” by Davis, she says. Guest vocalists joining the jazz band will be Kayla Petrilli and Alea Tveit.
