UTC golfers 3rd in Ryman

› The UTC women finished 10th out of 15 teams with a 919 in the Brickyard Collegiate at Macon, Ga. Furman won at 879. Holly Morgan led the Mocs with a 24th-place 226. Monica San Juan shot 229, Cristina Perez 231 and Megan Woods 233. Former St. Andrew’s-Sewanee golfer Jenna Burris shot 232 for 11th-place Middle Tennessee.

AUTO RACING

› The Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip began its 50th year of competitio­n Saturday night with a $5,000 Super Pro victory for Tony Helms of Ringgold. He won with a 4.66-second burst on a 4.65 dial in his new Undercover dragster. Kenny Brown of Marietta was second with a 6.55 run on a 6.54 dial in a 1972 Chevy Nova, and Taylor Sweeton of Chattanoog­a was third in his Chevy dragster. Chad Brewer of Canton, Ga., won the Foot Brake class with a 6.67 on a 6.65 in his 1973 Nova with Dickey Forrester second in a 1968 Camaro SS. Miles Walter was the Junior Dragster winner with Jesse Long second. Cleveland’s Kevin Rodden had the night’s low elapsed time (4.34) and top speed (155.2 mph).

TRACK & FIELD

› With seven first-place finishes and seven other top-fives, the Lee University men’s track and field team was third out of 16 teams at the Berry Field Day Invitation­al last weekend, and the Lady Flames used three firsts and seven other top-fives to wind up fourth out of 17 women’s teams. Adrian Martin won the women’s 100- and 200meter dashes, with teammate Kiley Brock sixth and eighth, and Martin, Cayce Bryan, Lacey Duvall and Jessica Childers won the women’s 4x400 relay. Charlee Boxall were second, fourth and fifth in the 800, Boxall was second and Audrey Smith sixth in the 1500, Hannah Buttolph was second in high jump and Camilla Sims was third in discus, fourth in shot put and sixth in hammer throw. Flames twins Josiah and Justin Brooks were first and second in the men’s 200 and second and first in the 400, and Josiah won the triple jump and was second with Justin fifth in long jump. They, Harold Smith and Brandon Raleigh won the 4x400, Smith won the 800, Christian Noble won the 1500 with Alex Carter sixth, Seth Eagleson was first in the 10k with Tucker Hindle third, Thomas Kelton was third in the 3000 steeplecha­se and Chase Warren was fourth in discus. Tyler Boone won the men’s 5000, and Dalton State’s Ryan Gebelein was eighth, and Bryan’s James Eliezer was fifth in the 200. DSC’s Emiy Poole and Nayeli Jacobo were fourth and eighth in the women’s 1500, and Poole was sixth in the 5000.

LACROSSE

› Sewanee midfielder Peter Brown was chosen the SAA men’s lacrosse offensive player of the week after totaling three goals, an assist and a .444 shots-on-goal percentage in two road wins. Thomas Oliver scored three goals and Ben Lucas, Henry Burns, Ryan Young and Cameron Acuff each netted two in Sunday’s 23-4 win at Oglethorpe.

› Mary Kate Myers scored five goals and Molly Elkins, Preston Cooper, Catherine Crigler and Alden Woolford added two apiece as the Sewanee women defeated visiting Piedmont 18-11 on Monday. Grace

Zechmann had three assists with a goal and Elkins added two assists for the Tigers (11-3), who trailed 5-4 at halftime.

› GSC leader Alabama-Huntsville defeated Lee’s first-year women’s lacrosse team 28-5 on Monday with seven goals and five assists from league scoring leader Nicole Federovitc­h. UAH is 12-4, 6-1 in the GSC.

Brianne Schapira scored three goals for the Lady Flames (0-12, 0-6), who got 10 saves from Jayne Renfro, who had to play in goal after injuries to Lee’s starter and backup.
