Lee sweeps Christian Brothers in softball

Leigh Beatenboug­h pitched a three-hitter and Taylor Moran followed with a five-hitter as Lee University beat Christian Brothers 4-1 and 3-1 in a Gulf South Conference softball doublehead­er Friday in Memphis.

Brooklynn Frazier and Moran homered in the fourrun sixth inning in the first game, Frazier with two RBIs and Moran going 2-for-3, and Frazier, Abby McKinney and Beatenboug­h each was 2-for-4 in the rematch — Beatenboug­h with an RBI and the other two with a run apiece. Also in game two, Zoe Miller and Stevie Baird each had three hits, a stolen base and a run scored for Lee (31-13, 17-9).

Beatenboug­h is 15-5, Moran 10-4.

› East Tennessee State 7-3, UTC 3-1: At Johnson City, Tenn., the Mocs fell to 12-29 and 2-9 in the Southern Conference while the Buccaneers rose to 19-19, 5-3.

J.J. Hamill was 3-for-4 with a two-run double and Amy Lewis was 2-for-4 and scored a run for UTC in the first game, when Tiffany Laughren was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for ETSU. Bucs leadoff batter Mykeah Johnson from Northwest Whitfield walked twice, was hit by a pitch and scored three runs, and former Chattanoog­a State pitcher Sharlene Godoy pitched the last three innings for her first save of 2017.

Halie Williamson had an RBI single for the Mocs.

Maddy Adams gave up one run, unearned, and Celie Hudson gave up two, one earned, in the gametwo loss, when ETSU’s Taylor Wright was 1-for-2 with the game’s only RBI. UTC scored its run and threatened more in the seventh, when Lewis and Hamill reached base on fielder’s choices after Katy Richardson walked and Hayleigh Weissenbac­h singled. Lewis scored and Hamill took second on a passed ball, and Brook Womack singled but was thrown out on a relay from third to second to end the game.

› Chattanoog­a State 16-3, Dyersburg State 0-2: At Chattanoog­a State, the 17th-ranked Lady Tigers needed nine innings to complete the two-day TCCAA sweep, as Colbie Thomas went 3-for-4 with the winning double and Kaleigh Wynne struck out seven in the nine innings. Jenna McElheney was 2-for-3 with an RBI double.

Wynne homered twice and drove in five runs in Friday’s five-inning first game, when Courtney Condon hit a grand slam, Alaeni Ray went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Aimie Davidson also went 3-for-3 and Madison Kurtz was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Lady Tigers (37-7, 25-3). Thomas also was 2-for-3, and Abby Hicks pitched the shutout.

› Hendrix 14-4, Sewanee 2-0: At Conway, Ark., Rachel Hoffman and Caroline Sweetin each was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the first loss in the SAA doublehead­er for the Tigers (1-31, 0-16), and Sweetin was 2-for-3 again in game two. Hendrix is 15-18, 7-10.

› Carson-Newman 3-7, Wingate 2-4: At Wingate, N.C., Katie Pritchett from Heritage High was 1-for-2 with a bases-loaded walk and a three-run homer as the Lady Eagles completed the SAC sweep. They’re, 33-10, 13-3.

Lacrosse

› The Lee women’s lacrosse team ended its first season 0-14 with a 17-2 loss Friday at Shorter. Crystal Marshall and Hannah Pridemore scored four goals apiece for Shorter (104). Hanah Rotello and Abby Fortner scored for Lee.

› Sewanee lost 12-6 at Rhodes in men’s lacrosse, as the Lynx improved to 11-2, 6-0 in the SAA. Thomas Lynde had two goals and an assist and Tyler Calnan also scored twice for the Tigers (7-6, 5-1).
