Hawks evaluating changes

- — WIRE REPORTS

ATLANTA — After a disappointing season ended with a first-round playoff loss, the Atlanta Hawks are evaluating possible changes in their front office. The current setup, in which coach Mike Budenholzer has authority over personnel matters with assistance from general manager Wes Wilcox, could be facing a shake-up. There was even a report Wednesday that Wilcox had been fired, which was denied by the team. “Hawks leadership is undergoing a period of evaluation and looking at how basketball operations works best,” the statement said. “There are no changes to report at this time and any reports indicating otherwise are inaccurate.” It seems likely that changes are coming, especially after the Hawks dipped to 43-39 this season and lost to the Washington Wizards in the opening round.

› CLEVELAND — LeBron James is in a bit of a brewhaha over his beer-bottle grab. On Monday night, James swiped a beer bottle from a courtside server during the third quarter of Cleveland’s playoff game against the Toronto Raptors and considered sipping it before handing it back. The exchange went viral on social media and James even kidded afterward that he wasn’t much of a beer drinker and would have taken a sip if it had been red wine. James said his agent is upset over Great Lakes Brewing Company’s use of his image with the bottle.

GOLF

› ALEDO, Texas — Tony Romo’s next pursuit of a championship will be in golf. And it’s a long shot. A month after the Dallas Cowboys quarterback retired, Romo is among nearly 9,500 players who signed up for the U.S. Open. He plays an 18-hole local qualifier Monday at Split Rail Links and Golf Club, about 30 minutes west of Fort Worth. If he advances, the next step is sectional qualifying on June 5 to get into the U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. This isn’t the first time Romo has tried to qualify. He made it out of local qualifying in 2010.

TENNIS

› LONDON — Maria Sharapova may have to wait until June 20 to see if she will be welcomed back to this year’s tournament at Wimbledon. Sharapova, the 2004 champion at the All England Club, returned to the WTA Tour last week after serving a 15-month ban for doping and reached the semifinals in Stuttgart, leaving her ranked No. 262. Sharapova is set to play two more tournaments, in Madrid and Rome, before the deadline for direct entry to Wimbledon qualifying.
