Mets suspend Harvey

-

NEW YORK — The Mets suspended star pitcher Matt Harvey for three days without pay as punishment for an undisclosed violation of team rules, the latest hiccup for a club beset by problems on and off the field this season. General manager Sandy Alderson announced the suspension in a brief statement before Sunday’s home game against Miami, which Harvey was scheduled to start. Alderson said the right-hander had been sent home, but the GM declined to comment further. Left-hander Adam Wilk was called up from Class AAA Las Vegas to face the Marlins. In his first big league game since 2015, the lefty was hit hard, giving up six runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. New York managed only one hit in a 7-0 loss and was shut out for the first time this season. The Mets said Harvey’s suspension took effect Saturday. Manager Terry Collins held a closed-door meeting with his team before Sunday’s game to talk about the penalty. “We are going to keep it in house, the way it’s supposed to be,” Collins said. “We hope to put it behind us and move forward.” The suspension removed Harvey from the 25-man roster. The Mets transferred injured ace Noah Syndergaard to the 60-day disabled list to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Wilk.

Atlanta dropped to 3-4-2 in its debut season. Villa struck first for New York City, rifling through a goal from the top of the box in the 17th minute, but Atlanta’s Carlos Carmona responded with his first goal of the year, netting the equalizer in the 39th minute. New York City (5-3-1) scored two goals within a one-minute span in the second half. Wallace found the net in the 60th minute, sneaking through the center of the box to receive a pass from Ethan White and apply the finishing touch. Maximiliano Morález added an insurance goal from 10 yards out.

› The NBA’s coaches have spoken: No one did a better job this season than Houston’s Mike D’Antoni and Miami’s Erik Spoelstra. D’Antoni and Spoelstra were announced Sunday as co-recipients of the inaugural Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year Award. It is named for the National Basketball Coaches Association’s longtime executive director who died earlier this year. The league’s 30 head coaches are the only voters for the award. A media panel voted separately for the NBA’s Coach of the Year award, which will be announced June 26.

› SALT LAKE CITY — The spinal cord leak procedure Golden State coach Steve Kerr had Friday at Duke University went well, general manager Bob Myers said, but there is no timetable for his return to the sideline. Kerr had back surgery about two years ago and has been dealing with complications. Assistant Mike Brown took over as acting coach for Game 3 of the Warriors’ first-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers. Myers said even doctors don’t have a timeline for the recovery process for Kerr, who did not travel to Salt Lake City for the Warriors’ 102-91 victory over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night. Golden State leads that Western Conference second-round series 3-0, and Game 4 is tonight in Utah.

TENNIS

› MADRID — Maria Sharapova’s reward for advancing to the second round of the Madrid Open is a match against Eugenie Bouchard, one of the most outspoken players against Sharapova’s return after a doping ban. Sharapova recovered from a shaky opening to defeat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 on Sunday. Playing in her second tournament since a 15-month doping suspension, Sharapova denied there would be extra motivation after Bouchard previously called her “a cheater” and said she should be banned for life from the sport. Today’s match against the 2014 Wimbledon finalist will be Sharapova’s sixth since getting back on tour after testing positive for meldonium at last year’s Australian Open. Bouchard has said Sharapova’s return was “unfair to all the other players who do it the right way” and that she hoped to play the five-time Grand Slam champion in Madrid.
