Growing up in Chickamauga, Ga., Angel Snow’s house rang with the eclectic music choices of her older brothers: punk rock, heavy metal and grunge with some acoustic singer-songwriter tossed in as well. The guys also instilled an interest in electronic music via works by Brian Eno and Trent Reznor.

“I love electronic elements, drum machines, beats and interesting sounds,” says Snow. “That ambient style is something I’ve always been drawn to.”

But she followed her heart into folk music.

“I love stories, and I love how artists are able to put stories together,” she says of that genre’s appeal.

But in an ironic turn of her music career, she circled back to the electronic sound as she made her latest album, “Magnetic.”

“Electronic music is something I’ve always been passionate about, but didn’t know if I could pull off. While making ‘Magnetic’ I realized that I could. That was a game-changer for me. I love experimenting with different vocal sounds and drum beats.”

So although for years she had steered away from using the sonic textures that moved her because she was afraid to try, when she opened herself to reach for the sounds that made her feel alive, she found the freedom to create music that instinctively drew her. From that realization, the album’s name, “Magnetic,” emerged.

“Magnetic” is the foundation of her upcoming show at Barking Legs Theater when Gig City presents Angel Snow on Saturday, July 8, at 7 p.m. Backed by her band, the show will be a multimedia performance with visuals on a screen behind her as she sings.

Snow says it took six years to write the songs on “Magnetic,” and each one represents a significant period in her life.

“‘Secret’ is essentially a song written about those of us who struggle with personal issues such as depression, mental illness or some type of tragic loss. Things that happen in our lives that we are afraid to talk about or admit. These things hinder us from moving forward in our lives, so the song is about freeing yourself and learning to be honest with people,” the artist explains.

“Photographs” discusses failed relationships. She describes it as a song about “finding and learning lessons from past relationships, holding onto those moments and letting go of the negativity.”

“Let You Down” is the story of an individual choosing to stay in a dysfunctional relationship just for the sake of having a relationship.

Although the subject matter may sound discouraging, Snow intends for her show at Barking Legs to be one of hope.

She says she wants to convey the message that she’s been vulnerable to all these experiences, too, and can empathize with those in the audience who also have been there.

“I’ve been really sad. I’ve had difficult times in my life. I want to sit in the dark with people and let them know I get it, and I hope they don’t feel so alone in this world.”
