Mocs honored for academics

The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a had 23 student-athletes with 4.0 grade point averages for the 2016-17 school year, and that ranked second among Southern Conference schools, behind only Mercer’s 31. This week, the SoCon released its annual academic honor roll, which set a league record with 2,100 honorees from the conference’s 10 member schools and 13 associate members. The honor roll is made up of varsity sports participan­ts who posted at least a 3.0 GPA, were eligible the entire academic year and were members of the final squad lists. The 148 SoCon student-athletes with 4.0 GPAs also set a record with two more than last year, according to a release from the conference. The 23 UTC student-athletes with that distinctio­n came from 11 of the school’s 13 sports programs. The women’s soccer team led with seven honorees: freshmen Catherine Cocke, Bailey Gale, Catherine Meyer and Kara Wegner; sophomores Bailey Coppedge and Mason Fox; and junior Brandy Herrera. Other UTC student-athletes with a 4.0, by team: women’s cross country/track and field — Julia Henderson (Fr.), Maddison Melchionna (Sr.), Haley Morris (So.) and Jessica York (Sr.); men’s cross country — Richard Guiry (So.) and Nathan Watson (Fr.); women’s golf — Holly Morgan and Megan Woods; football — Jack Keebler (Fr.); men’s basketball — Dylan Brewster (So.); softball — Morgan Kazerooni; volleyball — Mikaela Gauthreaux (Fr.); women’s basketball —

Ansley Chilton (Sr.); women’s tennis —

Sydney Patton (So.); women’s track and field — Abby Bateman (Fr.); wrestling —

Jacob Huffine (So.). In all, 158 Mocs were on the league’s honor roll, with 39 of those earning the SoCon Commission­er’s Medal by having a GPA of at least 3.8 for 2016-17.

› Sewanee had 122 student-athletes on the Southern Athletic Associatio­n’s All-Academic honor roll for the 2017 spring semester. Honorees must have a GPA of 3.25 or better during their semester of competitio­n.
