Scenic City card at East Hamilton

The fourth Scenic City Invitation­al profession­al wrestling event benefiting an area school is set for Aug. 4-5 at East Hamilton, and former East Ridge and University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a football standout Gunner Miller will be back to defend his 2016 title. The doors will open at 6:30 each evening, and the first bout is set for 7:30. General admission tickets cost $10, and a limited number of floor seats are available for $15. Some of the proceeds will go to new restroom facilities for the East Hamilton baseball and softball complex, according to a news release. Besides Miller, the 16 competitor­s will include former UFC fighter Matt Riddle, another returner from 2016, and longtime local wrestler Tank, who has said this will be his retirement event. Promoter Josh Massey said in the release that the field will include performers who have wrestled in Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, England and Germany as well as the United States. He further said that as of Monday fans from 33 states, Australia, England, Germany and Canada had bought tickets. For ticket inquiries or more informatio­n email dylanwaco.gmail.com.

› Chattanoog­an Avious Griffin raised his profession­al boxing record to 4-0 with a second-round knockout this past Saturday at the Marriott Convention Center in Durham, N.C. The 23-year-old Griffin, one of several former Chattanoog­a YCAP boxers succeeding at the pro level, defeated David Perez of Brooklyn, N.Y., in the 147-pound bout.

› Ten of Tennessee Wesleyan’s sports teams earned the distinctio­n of NAIA Scholar-Teams for 2016-17, led by women’s tennis with an aggregate 3.36 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). Other TWU teams with GPAs of 3.0 or better were women’s soccer (3.21), men’s tennis (3.18), women’s cross country (3.15), men’s golf (3.13), women’s golf (3.11), softball (3.08), women’s basketball (3.04) and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field (each 3.01).
