T.J. Carson debuts original music at First Draft Theater

- STAFF REPORT

First Draft Theater is the new home of Improv Chattanooga, but Tuesday night, Aug. 15, it will serve as a concert venue when T. J. Carson presents “Sober at the Party.”

“Sober at the Party” is a collection of his original songs, inspired by the title track of his EP, “Sober.” This debut public concert will be a PG-13 show with songs of love, loss and the future, interspersed with Carson’s stories about songwriting.

Show time is 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $10. First Draft Theater is located at 1800 Rossville Ave., Suite 106.

Carson has played piano for 17 years and written music for six.

Improv Chattanooga is a troupe of some of the best improvisers in the Southeast. The group’s goal is to make Chattanooga as wellknown for its improv theater as are bigger cities such as Chicago and New York.

A children’s improv class will be offered Saturday, Aug. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon at the theater. Cost is $5 at the door.

Kid Prov! will focus on basic rules of improvisation, stage etiquette, creating and maintaining a character and storytelling. Children will learn and practice these techniques through improvisation games and acting exercises.

The class will be led by Jessica Wilson, a theatre arts teacher employed by the Dade County school system. For five years she served as classroom advisor, actor and director of Muse of Fire Project, bringing short plays written by 9- to 12-year-old students to life. Wilson has been a core member of Improv Chattanooga for four years.
