Mueller-led Mocs win opener

- STAFF REPORTS

Sophomore Jordan Mueller had two goals and an assist as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team opened its 2017 season Friday night with a 3-2 win at Austin Peay. That broke a seven-game losing streak to the Ohio Valley Conference school. The host Governors (0-1) outshot the Mocs 15-5 and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks, but Melia Correa made seven saves for the visitors and Mueller gave them a lead from a Masey Fox assist just 3:13 into the game. Renee Semaan scored off a corner from McKenzie Dixon at 35:58, but Mueller converted a corner herself, from McKenzie Gregg, just 69 seconds later. Catherine Meyer gave UTC a 3-1 lead 12:38 into the second half, from Mueller’s pass. Kristin Roberston scored for Austin Peay four minutes later, but the Clarksville team could not get even. UTC hosts another OVC school, Eastern Kentucky, at 2 p.m. Sunday at Finley Stadium. Admission is free.

GOLF

› Bob Rice of Pikeville got to the championship match for the second year in a row in the Tennessee Senior Amateur golf tournament Friday, but he did not repeat his 2016 triumph. Longtime Memphis-area Tim Jackson, a member of The Honors Course in Ooltewah, beat Rice 3 and 2 in the final after getting past Danny Green of Jackson 4 and 3 at Five Oaks Golf & Country Club in Lebanon. That was Jackson’s 19th state championship. Rice won 2 and 1 over Buzz Fly of Memphis in their semifinal. There was no inaugural Super Senior Amateur final, as Chattanooga physician Neil Spitalny was unable to play Friday. That gave the championship to Ed Link of Memphis by default.

VOLLEYBALL

› The UTC volleyball team is sure to win its match this afternoon in Maclellan Gymnasium, and not just because the Mocs have been 26-3 in that building the last two seasons. This one won’t count on the 2017 record. It’s the annual Blue and Gold intrasquad scrimmage, starting at 3, but supporters are invited to attend at no charge to see what the team looks like. “I know we all are excited within our program to be in front of our great fans once again,” coach Travis Filar said in a school release, “in addition to being thankful for the opportunity to showcase our outstanding group of committed and hard-working student-athletes.” The Mocs officially open next Friday against North Dakota in a tournament at Ole Miss, followed by matches against Florida A&M, Ole Miss and Louisiana Tech.
