‘Carter’ tells grid saga

- BY KEVIN MCDONOUGH UNITED FEATURE SYNDICATE

That sound you hear is summer slipping through your fingers. You can both seize the moment and still feel the season beginning to change while watching the Little League World Series (7:30 p.m., ESPN). Talk about the “Boys of Summer.”

After the game, ESPN will air another “30 for 30” (9:30 p.m., approximately) documentary, “What Carter Lost.”

Fans of “Friday Night Lights,” whether the book, the film or the excellent television series, are well acquainted with the place high school football occupies in Texas culture. Players for a championship high school team can become local demigods. And that can play havoc with a young man’s head.

Some in Texas contend that no high school football team was as good as the 1988 Dallas Carter High School football squad. A total of 21 of its players received college scholarships, and several went on to the NFL.

Carter dominated state football during the era that inspired “Friday Night Lights.” This film interviews former players, their parents, teachers and friends as they recall tragic incidents, including a string of armed robberies, that would seal some players’ fates and tarnish the team’s legacy.

Nearly a generation after the fact, “What Carter Lost” allows some players to tell their sides of the story for the first time.

In addition to aspects of “Friday Night Lights,” this mythical team also inspired the 2015 theatrical release “Carter High.”

› Nothing says end-of-summer like a really dumb movie. The streaming service Crackle premieres the comedy film “Party Boat,” starring Jay Mohr (“Saturday Night Live”) and Brett Davern (“Awkward”). Complications ensue when a young man (Davern) hopes to impress his crush, Katie Leclerc (“Switched at Birth”), with the “most epic rager” ever. Help yourself.
