TOWNSEND ATELIER HOSTS SEAN CHEETHAM
Lecture, demonstration Friday night at studio
Los Angeles oil painter Sean Cheetham will give a lecture and demonstration during “An Evening with Sean Cheetham” on Friday, Sept. 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Townsend Atelier, 301 E. 11th St.
Cheetham is in town to lead a portrait workshop Saturday-Monday, Sept. 9-11, at Townsend, which has sold out.
“His workshop is full, but the public can still meet the artist, watch him paint and talk about his work during this fun and informative evening,” says Peggy Townsend of Friday night’s free event.
“Sean will be painting a portrait from a live model. These demos are always fun, fascinating and laid back,” she says.
Cheetham is a contemporary oil painter whose training is steeped in traditional portraiture. Townsend says he is known for his technical skill and for achieving accuracy and harmony in his paintings, which he credits to a deep understanding of drawing and to his own system of mixing colors.
He has exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2005, where he was included in the prestigious BP Portrait award show. His self-portrait, “Champagne Wishes and Caviar Dreams,” was at the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
In 2006, Cheetham had his first one-man exhibition at The Mendenhall Sobieski Gallery in Pasadena, Calif. He has become recognized as one of the most acclaimed young figurative painters today, and has been featured in numerous publications including American Artist’s Workshop magazine.
