Aquarium’s River Teachers workshop registering

- STAFF REPORT

Staff at the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute will school teachers on testing water quality during a River Teachers workshop being held Saturday, Sept. 9, at the institute, 175 Baylor School Road. Class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Thom Benson, Tennessee Aquarium spokesman, says the River Teachers workshop is “a great opportunity for teachers to have a rich experience in the field with our scientists and receive some training to get kids in the classroom fired up about biodiversity and conservation.”

Teachers will complete training using Georgia Adopt-A-Stream methods to test water quality. Upon successful completion, participants will be certified in macroinvertebrate and chemical monitoring.

Teachers can use these methods to get students involved in citizen science and water quality issues. The class will also discover the biodiversity in Southeastern rivers and streams by observing fish found in a local creek.

Teachers are advised the workshop will be held indoors and out. They should come prepared to get in the water. Waders will be provided.

Class fee is $25. Registration fee will be refunded upon completion of workshop.
