Gators still lead Carpet Capital

Florida’s Alejandro Tosti and the Gators as a team maintained their leads Saturday in the second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate golf tournament at The Farm at Rocky Face, Ga., while the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a made a 24-stroke improvemen­t from Friday with a 290 and moved up to 14th place. The Mocs are at 604, four shots behind Virginia and six ahead of Troy. Dalton State shot 295 and slipped from seventh to 11th at 588, led by reigning NAIA player of the year S.M. Lee (68) and Chase Cole at 143, tied for 17th individual­ly. Led by Tosti’s 134, Florida goes into the final round at 570, just one shot ahead of Georgia Tech and Alabama with Tennessee at 572 and the Volunteers’ Lorenzo Scalise second individual­ly at 136. Chase Roswall from Baylor School is tied for 11th at 141. UTC’s Luke Long (71) is tied for 35th at 148 with Phillip Hickam sharing 43rd, along with Dalton State’s Sport Allmond, at 149. UTC’s Will Porter shot a 70 and is at 151.

› Matt Cooper of Colliervil­le won the 30th Tennessee Mid-Amateur golf championsh­ip Saturday at Colliervil­le’s Spring Creek Ranch with a third-round 72 and an even-par 208.

Whit Turnbow of Murfreesbo­ro was second at 211 and Ed McDugle of Memphis was third at 215. Josh Coley of Mount Juliet, who grew up in Chattanoog­a and played at Cleveland State and Lee University, closed with a 75 and tied for 10th at 218, and Cleveland residents Wes Farris and Hunter Vest tied for 12th at 219.

› Cleveland State and Georgia Northweste­rn tied 311-311 in their men’s golf match Friday at LaFayette, Ga. GNTC’s scorers were Branton Bailey and Cole Roberts with 76s, David Manis with a 77 and Adrian Clark with an 82.

SOCCER

The Covenant College men’s soccer team pulled out its second 1-0 win in three nights Friday, this one at Belhaven in Jackson, Miss., but the Scots lost 1-0 at Millsaps there Saturday night. Against Belhaven, Josh Brower scored in the 20th minute from an assist by Jesse Riggs. The Scots were outshot 14-5 on Saturday, and Jonathan Crossman made seven saves in defeat.

› The Covenant women (3-0) edged Transylvan­ia 1-0 on Addy Cronan’s unassisted goal in overtime Saturday at Berry.

Alpo Sipila had his second winning goal in four college matches as Sewanee’s men edged Marymount 1-0 at Fayettevil­le, N.C. He scored unassisted in the 27th minute. Sewanee’s women lost 2-0 at Division II member Trevecca Nazarene.

› Joe Goreham’s goal in the 40th minute gave Bryan (4-2) a 1-0 men’s soccer win at West Virginia Tech.

Jake Miller assisted on goals by Fraser Barlow at 8:50 and George Green at 58:36 as Tennessee Wesleyan won 2-0 in men’s socccer at Cumberland­s. TWU is 5-1.

› Adriana Romera had three goals and an assist and Keyle Snyder had two goals and two assists as the Dalton State women beat visiting Talladega 10-0. It was 9-0 at halftime. Rosie Lindo assisted on the first two and scored the sixth, and Brittany Jensen and Alyssa Bilbrey each had a goal and one assist. Alondra Salaises and Diana Hitesan scored the last two.

CROSS COUNTRY

Lee University finished third in the women’s 6-kilometer race and fourth in the men’s 8k Saturday morning in the Furman Cross Country Classic in Greenville, S.C. Furman’s Allie Buchalski (20:30.42) and Clemson’s James Quattlebau­m (23.50.40) were the individual winners. In the women’s race, Lee’s Emily Buwalda (22:10.26), Audrey Smith and Amy Carpenter were 17th, 19th and 20th overall but only four non-Division I runners finished ahead of them, and Charlee Boxall was 24th with Becca Umbarger 30th. Lee’s Christian Noble was 12th and the third non-D-I finisher in the 8k in 24:26.00, and Seth Eagleson, Caleb Eagleson and Harold Smith were 20th, 24th and 32nd.

GENERAL

› A celebratio­n of life service for former Cleveland High School football and track and field star Bobby Thompson, 59, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Chattanoog­a Funeral Home’s North chapel, and visitation­s are set for 4-8 p.m. today and 1-3 p.m. Monday. Thompson received a scholarshi­p to play football at Tennessee, and he and Cleveland teammate Paul Davis combined to win the 1977 track team state title with Thompson as the discus and shot put champion.

› UTC interim athletic director Scott Altizer will be the special speaker for the Chattanoog­a Quarterbac­k Club’s noon luncheon meeting Monday at Spring Hill Suites on Riverfront Parkway, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $12 with a meal, $4 without. Altizer came to UTC in August 2014 as senior associate AD for internal operations. He previously worked 20 years with the football program at Tennessee.
