Wake Forest cashes in on turnovers, 34-10

-

BOSTON — John Wolford ran for one touchdown and threw for another and Wake Forest forced four turnovers on Saturday in a 34-10 victory over Boston College in their Atlantic Coast Conference openers.

Wolford ran 20 times for 92 yards, and the Demon Deacons (2-0) scored 21 points off three BC (1-1) interceptions and a fumble. Eagles freshman Anthony Brown was picked off three times, including one that Essang Bassey returned 30 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-7 just before the half.

Jessie Bates III also intercepted Brown, running it back 37 yards before he was pushed out of bounds at the 2 while diving for the pylon. Two plays later, Cade Carney ran it in from the 3 to make it 31-10.

Wolford completed 13 of 19 passes for 151 yards.

Brown, a freshman who was named the starter before last week’s victory over Northern Illinois, was 11-for-29 for 119 yards with three interceptions — though two went through his receivers’ hands. He was replaced in the third quarter after his third interception by Darius Wade, who completed 7 of 12 passes for 44 yards.

The teams traded punts over the first six drives before John Hilliman fumbled on the second play of BC’s fourth possession. Four plays later, Wolford hit Greg Dortch for a 9-yard score.

After Wolford ran it in from 29 yards out, the Eagles scored on a 6-yard pass Jon Hilliman’s first career touchdown catch with three minutes left in the half. BC then held on defense to get the ball back with 2:13 on the clock.

But on second down, Brown’s pass went through Kobay White’s hands and Bassey grabbed it, taking it down the sideline for the score that made it 21-7 at the half.

› Georgia Tech 37, Jacksonville State 10 ATLANTA — TaQuon Marshall passed for three touchdowns, receiver Ricky Jeune scored twice and Georgia Tech beat Jacksonville State 37-10 on Saturday.

Playing five days after losing in two overtimes to Tennessee, The Yellow Jackets (1-1) had a sluggish start but took charge with three TDs in the third quarter and added a fourth-quarter score when Marshall ran for 1 yard.

Marshall, making his second career start, was 5 for 7 passing for 112 yards but he had just 25 yards rushing on 13 carries, far off his production from Monday, when he ran for five touchdowns and set an Atlantic Coast Conference record for yards rushing by a quarterback with 249.

Roc Thomas rushed 18 times for 86 yards for Jacksonville State (1-1), which is ranked No. 5 in the FCS coaches’ poll and has a 32-game winning streak in the regular season against non-FBS opponents.

Jacksonville State quarterback Bryant Horn had 50 yards passing and 41 rushing in the first half, but he threw his second pick of the game on the opening drive of the second half. Both of his interceptions immediately led to touchdowns.

› Duke 41, Northwestern 17

DURHAM, N.C. — Daniel Jones accounted for 413 total yards and four touchdowns, and Duke cruised to a victory over Northwestern.

Jones shook off his first interception since the middle of last season to pass for 305 yards and two touchdowns and rush for a career-high 108 yards and two scores.

Jones’ streak of 202 consecutive passes without an interception, longest in the nation, ended in the first quarter with a pick by Montre Hartage. Jones responded with touchdowns on the Blue Devils’ next three possessions — a 52-yard pass to Chris Taylor and scoring runs of 11 and 4 yards — to get Duke out to a 21-10 halftime lead.

Jones added a 1-yard touchdown pass to Davis Koppenhaver in the second half and Shaun Wilson had a late touchdown run to turn it into a rout.

› Indiana 34,

Virginia 17

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Redshirt freshman Peyton Ramsey completed 16 of 20 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns to lead Indiana to a victory over Virginia.

Ramsey replaced ineffective starter Richard Lagow in the second quarter. Lagow passed for 420 yards on 65 attempts last week, a school record, in a 49-21 loss to Ohio State. But when Lagow started this game 3 for 10 with an interception, he was pulled by coach Tom Allen.

Virginia (1-1) again struggled to run the ball until it was forced by its deficit to throw 66 times. The Hoosiers (1-1) held the Cavaliers to 55 yards on 25 rushing attempts, a week after Virginia gained only 92 yards against FBS opponent William and Mary.

› North Carolina State 37, Marshall 20

RALEIGH, N.C. — Ryan Finley threw three touchdown passes and North Carolina State beat Marshall.

Reggie Gallaspy added two scoring runs while Finley was 29 of 36 for 341 yards with scores covering 24 yards to Stephen Louis, 34 yards to Kelvin Harmon and 39 yards on a flea-flicker pass to Jaylen Samuels that jump-started a sputtering offense.

N.C. State (1-1), coming off a loss to South Carolina in the opener, twice fell behind by 10 points before responding with touchdowns on four straight possessions — including three in a row to end the first half — and scoring the game’s final 27 points.
