Cash advances in USTA nationals

Top seeds Wesley Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Naples, Fla., won 6-0, 6-2 in their Men’s 60 round-of-16 doubles match Tuesday against Pat Heneghan of Chicago and David Dougherty of Cincinnati in the USTA national grass court tournament at Pontiac, Mich. Cash and Vines had a bye in the round of 32 and play today against Paul Hoffstein of Pennsylvania and Chris Reynard of Virgina, one of the fifth-seeded duos. Cash is a 5 seed in singles and defeated Gary Radtke of Tampa, Fla., 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 32. He faces Andrew Stanley of California today.

SOCCER

› Lee University senior goalkeeper Tristan Putnam was the Gulf South Conference men’s soccer defender of the week, the league announced Tuesday, and Tuesday night he had another outstanding performance but in a losing cause. Young Harris, ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II last week, edged the visiting Flames 1-0 despite 10 saves by Putnam. Young Harris (3-1-1) outshot Lee (1-1-2) 24-5, 11-3 on goal, and scored 48 seconds into the second half when Carlos Gomez rattled a shot into the net off the left post on a rebound of a Mehdy Hidane attempt. Putnam has 25 saves in four games.

› The Dalton State men’s soccer team, ranked 19th in this week’s NAIA poll, edged No. 17 Bryan 4-3 in two overtimes Tuseday at Lakeshore Park in Dalton. That lifted the Roadrunners to 5-1 for the season. Their Daniel Okonkwo, a sophomore forward, was the Southern States Athletic Conference offensive player of the week for his three goals and one assist in two wins. One of his scores was the overtime winner against Shorter.

› Tennessee Wesleyan’s scheduled soccer home doubleheader Tuesday against Bethel (Tenn.) was rained out.

VOLLEYBALL

› The Bryan College volleyball team slipped to 2-10 overall and 1-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a 3-2 home loss Tuesday evening to Montreat. Set scores were 19-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-27, 15-10.

› Tennessee Wesleyan lost 3-0 in AAC volleyball Tuesday night at Bluefield. Set scores were 25-16, 25-11, 25-16. In defeat for the Lady Bulldogs (3-8, 0-2), Tia Madden had 12 assists and Olivia Fisher led in kills with five.

› Kellee Geren had 22 assists and another Cleveland High School graduate, Marissa Langford, led in kills with eight, but their Milligan College team lost 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-21) to visiting Union College in AAC volleyball Tuesday. Milligan, ranked along with Union in the preseason, is 2-8 overall and 0-2 in league play.

GOLF

› Led by an individual second-place tie for Haverly Harrold, the Lee University women’s golf team finished eighth out of 15 teams Tuesday in the University of Indianapolis Fall Invitational at Carmel, Ind., after having the third best round Monday. Eight schools in the field were in the NCAA Division II national tournament last spring. Harrold contributed a 146 to the Lady Flames’ 616, while Sam Burrus tied for 22nd at 153. The host Greyhounds were the team winners at 588.

› Georgia Northwestern finished 10th out of 12 teams in the men’s golf tournament hosted by Wallace State Community College at Cullman, Ala., on Monday and Tuesday. The event at Cross Creek Golf Club went on despite tough weather conditions, and the all-freshman Bobcats improved on their rounds of 324 and 328 Monday with a 313 Tuesday. Lane Strickland led them with a 54-hole total of 238, followed by Adrian Clark at 239, Branton Bailey at 242 and Cole Roberts at 250. Roberts and Clark are from Northwest Whitfield High School, Strickland from Sonoraville and Bailey from Gordon Central.

› The Chattanooga Chapter of the Alabama Alumni & Friends Association is organizing a bus trip for the Crimson Tide’s Sept. 23 football game at Vanderbilt.
