Chubb, Fromm, ‘D’ lead Georgia to win over Samford

-

ATHENS, Ga. — Nick Chubb ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns, and freshman quarterback Jake Fromm threw three scoring passes in his first home start as No. 13 Georgia’s defense was dominant in a 42-14 victory over Samford on Saturday night.

With fellow senior Sony Michel held out with an ankle injury sustained last week in a victory at Notre Dame, Chubb had his busiest game of the season. Chubb’s season-high 16 carries, all in the first three quarters, helped him become the first Bulldogs back to run for 100 yards this season.

Georgia (3-0) avoided a letdown after the emotional win in South Bend, and Chubb already had 94 yards rushing and a touchdown by the end of the opening quarter, while Samford (2-1) was still without a first down.

Chubb was stopped on a fourth-down run on the Bulldogs’ opening drive, but he rarely was stopped again. He had back-to-back 20-yard runs to open Georgia’s next drive and added a 32-yard scoring run late in the opening quarter.

Chubb scored on a 14-yard run early in the third quarter before watching backups handle the remainder of the carries.

Fromm, who took over after starter Jacob Eason suffered a sprained left knee in the first quarter of the season-opening win over Appalachian State, was impressive. He threw scoring passes of 51 and 9 yards to Terry Godwin and 5 yards to Mecole Hardman.

Eason, who leaned on a crutch on the sideline at Notre Dame, was not in uniform but shed the crutch while showing no sign of favoring the injured knee. Coach Kirby Smart has not said if Eason is close to returning.

NORMAN, Okla. — Baker Mayfield passed for 331 yards and four touchdowns, and CeeDee Lamb caught four passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns before he was ejected for targeting on a block in the second quarter.

Marquise Brown had career highs of six catches for 155 yards, including an 87-yard touchdown grab in the fourth quarter for the Sooners (3-0), who finished with 631 yards.

Tulane (1-2) scored on its first two drives. › No. 8 Ohio State 38, Army 7

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Freshman J.K. Dobbins ran for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Buckeyes rebounded from a deflating 31-16 loss to Oklahoma.

Dobbins broke away for an electrifying 52-yard touchdown run to open the second half after romping for 22 yards on the previous play, extending Ohio State’s 17-7 halftime lead. The Buckeyes (2-1) then got touchdowns on two of their next three drives to pull away.

The outmanned Black Knights (2-1) compiled 278 offensive yards but didn’t score after a 3-yard Darnell Woolfork touchdown run in the second quarter.

› No. 7 Michigan 29, Air Force 13

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Donovan Peoples-Jones returned a punt 79 yards for a score and Quinn Nordin tied a school record with five field goals to offset Michigan’s offensive struggles.

The Wolverines (3-0) didn’t lead by more than three points until Peoples-Jones’ touchdown early in the third quarter.

The Falcons (1-1) failed to complete a pass until Arion Worthman connected with Ronald Cleveland on a short route and the receiver turned it into a 64-yard touchdown with 11:54 left in the quarter, pulling Air Force within three points again.

Michigan’s Karan Higdon sealed the victory with a 36-yard touchdown run with 1:02 left.

› No. 9 Oklahoma State 59, Pittsburgh 21

PITTSBURGH — Mason Rudolph threw five touchdown passes, all in the first half, to lead the Cowboys in a road rout.

Rudolph completed 23 of 32 passes for 497 yards before being pulled in the middle of the third quarter with the Cowboys (3-0) in full command. He did throw his first interception of the season, ending a streak of 216 consecutive passes without a pick dating back to last season. It was the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Jalen McCleskey caught seven passes, including three touchdowns, for 162 yards as one of four Oklahoma State receivers to hit the century mark. Joining him were James Washington (124), Marcell Ateman (109) and Dillon Stoner (100).

The Cowboys reached the end zone on each of their first seven possessions, and Pitt (1-2) simply couldn’t keep up. › No. 10 Wisconsin 40, BYU 6

PROVO, Utah — Alex Hornibrook threw for four touchdowns and 256 yards as the Badgers (3-0) met little resistance, essentially putting the game away in the first half.

The sophomore missed on only one pass all day. He was 10-of-11 for 149 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, which ended with the Badgers up 24-6. He hit on all eight of his passes after the break.

The Cougars (1-3) tallied just 192 total yards to Wisconsin’s 491. BYU quarterback Beau Hoge, son of former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Merril, made his first career start with Tanner Mangum out with an injury. Hoge threw an interception on his first attempt and never got a whole lot going.

› No. 15 Auburn 24, Mercer 10

AUBURN, Ala. — Kamryn Pettway ran for 128 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers overcame five turnovers in another troubling performance by their offense.

After being held without a touchdown in a 14-6 loss at Clemson last weekend, Auburn (2-1) could at least point to a stout defensive opponent as the reason for its troubles. Not this time.

Southern Conference member Mercer (1-2), which only resumed football five years ago, gave the Tigers all they could handle in front of a disgruntled crowd at Jordan-Hare Stadium — many of whom didn’t bother returning to their seats after a lackluster first half that ended with the home team ahead 10-3.

The Bears (1-2) fell behind 17-3 on Pettway’s second touchdown, a 9-yard run midway through the third quarter. But the private school from Macon, Ga., made things interesting with its only drive of any significance. Mercer pushed 83 yards in 12 plays, capped by former Calhoun High School standout Kaelan Riley’s 7-yard scoring pass to Marquise Irvin with just less than 14 minutes to go.

› No. 16 Virginia Tech 64, East Carolina 17 GREENVILLE, N.C. — Redshirt freshman Josh Jackson threw for 372 yards and five touchdowns — three to Cam Phillips, who had a program-record 14 catches for 189 yards to help the Hokies improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2011.

Virginia Tech roared out of a slow first-quarter start by scoring 57 straight points — including 34 points and four touchdown passes by Jackson in the third quarter alone — to make it a rout.

The Pirates fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2004.

› Vanderbilt 14,

No. 18 Kansas State 7

NASHVILLE — Kyle Shurmur scored on a 2-yard run with 8:23 left, and the Commodores earned their first win over a ranked nonconference opponent since 1946 (North Carolina State).

With the win, Vanderbilt improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2011, and it has won five straight at home dating to last season.

Kansas State (2-1) last beat an SEC team on the road in the regular season in 1982 at Kentucky.

Senior quarterback Jesse Ertz tried to drive Kansas State to the tying score, but he was tackled short on fourth-and-8 deep in Vanderbilt territory by Oren Burks and LaDarius Wiley with 1:06 left.

› No. 20 TCU 56, SMU 36

FORT WORTH, Texas — Jalen Reagor made a leaping 38-yard catch between four defenders in the end zone on the last play of the first half, putting TCU ahead of upset-minded SMU for good.

The Mustangs (2-1) led 19-7 before Kenny Hill threw three touchdown passes in the final 7 1/2 minutes of the second quarter. The last was Reagor’s catch in a crowd of Mustangs who seemed more like observers than defenders.

Darius Anderson ran for two touchdowns for TCU (3-0) in the second half.

› No. 21 Washington State 52, Oregon State 23

PULLMAN, Wash. — Luke Falk threw six touchdown passes — three to Tavares Martin Jr. — to help the Cougars earn their fourth consecutive victory over the Beavers.

Washington State (3-0, 1-0 Pac-12) was coming off a triple-overtime victory over Boise State.

Falk, the Football Bowl Subdivision active leader with 98 touchdown passes, completed 37 of 49 passes for 396 yards without an interception. Martin had 10 catches for 194 yards.

Jake Luton threw for 179 yards for Oregon State (1-3, 0-1).
