MOCS GAME IN BITS & PIECES

- gene Henley UTC beat writer

SATURDAY’S STAR

UT-Martin preseason All-OVC quarterback Troy Cook was an efficient 16-for-21 for 183 yards and three touchdowns. He was at his best on third down, with some big throws that extended drives and kept the UTC defense on the field.

SATURDAY’S STAT

The Mocs’ offense had no first downs in the first half and didn’t run a play on UTM’s end of the field until their 32nd play of the game and third of the fourth quarter. By that time the Skyhawks led 21-7..

TURNING POINT

Down 14-0 at halftime, the Mocs came out with some energy to start the second half, but three plays after gaining their first first down of the game, quarterback Nick Tiano was sacked and fumbled. The ball was recovered by UTM’s Mike Turner and the Skyhawks scored two plays later for a 21-0 lead.

HIGHLIGHT PLAY

Cook found Londell Lee for a 23-yard completion to convert a third-and-9 from UTC’s 27yard line in the second quarter. At the time the Mocs were down seven and potentially facing a field-goal situation. Instead, the Skyhawks scored two plays later.

WHAT IT MEANS

The UTC defense had its moments, but the offense looked lethargic most of the game. For this team to be successful this season, the offense will have to catch up and find ways to be productive. Otherwise it will be a long year.
