DU banquet set Thursday

The Chattanoog­a chapter of Ducks Unlimited will hold its annual banquet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Stratton Hall. The fundraiser for wetlands and waterfowl conservati­on will include live and silent auctions, raffles and games. Tickets are $15 (youth), $50 (single),$60 (couple) or $300 (sponsor). They include a one-year DU membership and are available by calling Ross Malone at 322-3108.

AUTO RACING

› The Lucas Oil Southern States Midget Series visited Boyd’s Speedway in Ringold on Saturday, with drivers from seven states in the featured event and Kent Christian of Danville, Ind., the winner ahead of Jordan Howell of Columbia, Mo., and Tim Nye of Troutman, N.C. Other top-three finishers by class: Sportsman — Colton Jackson (Chatsworth, Ga.), Billy Callahan, Adam Mitchell; Limited Late Model — Ronnie Johnson (Chattanoog­a), Heath Hindman, Andy Miller; Crate Late Model — Jason Deal (Copperhill, Tenn.), Chip Brindle (Chatsworth), Craig Burrows; Hobby Stock — Robert Elkins

› Kelsey Keener of Dunlap won $3,000 for first place in the Super Pro drag racing class Saturday night at Brainerd Motorsport­s Park. Keener, 24, the only woman in the class, won with a 5.49-second burst on a 5.47 dial in a dragster owned by her father and powered by a big-block Chevrolet engine. Lookout Valley’s Charles Fitzsimmon­s was second in his 1969 Plymouth. Toby Barnes from Newnan, Ga., won the Foot Brake class with Shane Kay

of Crossville won the Motorcycle class with Crosby Blair second; Scottie Walters was first and Matt Grayson second in the 16-car Shootout paying $1,500. Soddy-Daisy’s Kaleb Winters won the 18-entry Junior Dragster class with Whitwell’s Cole Grayson second.

FOOTBALL

› Austin Peay sophomore quarterbac­k JaVaughn Craig from Chattanoog­a and McCallie School is the Ohio Valley Conference football co-offensive player of the week after the Governors emphatical­ly ended a 29-game losing streak with a 69-13 rout of Morehead State. They set an OVC record with 10 rushing touchdowns, and Craig had four of them on runs of 3, 1, 1 and 5 yards. He totaled 37 yards on nine carries. UT-Martin quarterbac­k Troy Cook was the other co-offensive player for his work against UTC, and UTM lineman Anthony Brown was the defensive honoree.

SOCCER

› The Bryan College soccer teams swept the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference playerof-the-week awards Monday. Freshman Makena Giles was the women’s offensive selection for hat tricks in both wins and two assists along with the three goals against Life, and senior Polly Holt was the defensive honoree after helping the Lady Lions win 5-2 and 9-0, adding her first career goal and her first assist against St. Andrews. Bryan’s Charlie Clarke earned the AAC men’s offensive honor with four goals in two games, and fellow junior Dino Jones got the defensive nod by helping limit St. Andrews to five shots (one on goal), recording an assist and scoring the winning goal.

› Dalton State sophomore Santiago Moore was the Southern States men’s soccer offensive player of the week for his three goals and three assists in two overtime wins, including golden goals in both.

VOLLEYBALL

› Sewanee’s Destiny Stewart was chosen the Southern Athletic Associatio­n volleyball offensive player of the week, and teammate Peyton Parent was the defensive honoree. Stewart totaled 68 kills as the Tigers went 2-1, and she leads the SAA in total kills (155) and in attacks, kills and points per set. Parent had 70 digs and 20 assists in the three matches and leads the SAA in digs per conference set.

› The first-year Cleveland State volleyball team beat the visiting Covenant junior varsity 3-0 Monday by set scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-21 and is 7-3 going into another home match Wednesday against the Bryan JV.
