Florida Atlantic tops MTSU, 38-20

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Devin Singletary ran for 133 yards and a school record-tying four touchdowns and Florida Atlantic beat Middle Tennessee 38-20 in a Conference USA opener Saturday night.

The victory ended MTSU’s nine-game winning streak against FAU, which had been the longest by one C-USA team over another.

John Urzua started again in place of Brent Stockstill, MTSU’s career leader for touchdown passes who has missed three games with an injury. Urzua was 31-of-51 passing for 359 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepte­d three times. Ty Lee had eight receptions for 136 yards receiving and a touchdown for the Blue Raiders (2-3, 0-1).

Singletary rushed for three first-half touchdowns as the Owls (2-3, 1-0) took a 24-6 lead. He added his final TD run early in the fourth quarter to go up 31-13.

› UCF 40, Memphis 13

ORLANDO, Fla. — McKenzie Milton threw for three touchdowns, Adrian Killins Jr. accounted for two scores and UCF beat Memphis in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Killins’ first touchdown, a 96-yard run, was the longest play from scrimmage in conference history.

Riley Ferguson passed for 321 yards and a touchdown but threw three intercepti­ons and lost a fumble for Memphis (3-1). The Tigers came in averaging 43 points per game.

› Hendrix 48, Sewanee 42

At Sewanee, Tenn., Miles Thompson threw four touchdown passes, three to Nate Hodapp, and ran for two scores as the Warriors built a 48-21 lead and weathered a closing flurry in the Southern Athletic Associatio­n game.

The host Tigers (2-3, 1-2) took the lead on Warren Holland’s 2-yard run four minutes into the game and went up 14-7 on William Phillips’ 66-yard punt return later in the first quarter, but Hendrix (4-1) answered each time with a TD pass and broke a 21-21 tie with two scores in the final 1:15 of the first half.

The Arkansas school then scored the first two TDs of the second half before Mikey Plancher ran for two Sewanee scores and Micah Maes caught an 8-yard TD pass from Alex Darras.

Darras was 24-for-45 for 353 passing yards and two TDs, along with two intercepti­ons and a lost fumble, and Steven Hearn and Cyrus McCullough caught five throws each for 92 and 81 yards with Maes and Allan Puri adding 65 yards and a TD apiece. Thompson was 27-of-43 for 279 yards and ran 20 times for 119, and Hodapp caught 12 passes for 144 yards.

The Tigers’ Conoly Koontz had 10 solo tackles, including two for loss, and two assists, and Lee Menefee had 2.5 lost-yardage stops and forced a fumble.

› Jacksonvil­le State 34, Tennessee Tech 7 COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Kendrick Doss completed 11 of 13 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to lead Jacksonvil­le State over Tennessee Tech.

It was the Ohio Valley Conference opener for the Gamecocks (3-1), who have won three straight conference titles.

Roc Thomas ran for 102 yards on 18 carries, while Demontez Terry had eight catches for 160 yards and a TD.
