Governors fall to Gamecocks

CLARKSVILL­E, Tenn.— Roc Thomas had 18 carries for 135 yards and two scores, and Bryant Horn accounted for two touchdowns as Jacksonvil­le State beat Austin Peay 34-14 in Ohio Valley Conference football Saturday.

JSU (4-1, 2-0) has won 11 straight in the series and has won 35 regular-season games in a row against foes who are not members of the Football Bowl Subdivisio­n, dating to a loss at Eastern Illinois on Nov. 16, 2013. Eastern Illinois was ranked No. 2 in the Championsh­ip Subdivisio­n at the time.

Horn hit Trae Barry for a 6-yard touchdown to cap a 17-play, 91-yard drive that opened the scoring with 3:33 left in the first quarter. After Austin Peay (3-3, 3-1) went three-and-out on the ensuing possession, a 23-yard run TD run by Thomas made it 14-0 just 38 seconds later.

The Gamecocks opened the second half with a nine-play, 77-yard drive that made it 27-7 when Bryant scored on a 4-yard run. Jeremiah Oatsvall hit D.J. Montgomery for a 3-yard touchdown to pull the Governors within 27-14 early in the fourth quarter, but De’Marcus Flowers returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards to cap the scoring.

MURFREESBO­RO, Tenn. — Tavares Thomas had just six carries but made three of them touchdowns to lift the Blue Raiders to the Conference USA win.

MTSU (3-3, 1-1) also got a touchdown from Brad Anderson, who scored on a 29-yard throw from John Urzua and ran 11 times for a career-high 112 rushing yards.

FIU (3-2, 2-1) tied the game in the first quarter with a field goal by Jose Borregales, but the Blue Raiders took over from there. Anderson put them on top for good with the touchdown catch, and then Thomas punched in his first two scores, both up the middle.

His third touchdown came midway through the fourth quarter on a sweep to the right from the 4, and he finished with 20 yards on the ground. His longest carry covered 8 yards.

› Murray State 13, UT-Martin 10

MARTIN, Tenn.— Gabriel Vicente’s 32-yard field goal as time expired lifted Murray State over the Skyhawks (3-3).

The Racers (2-4) tied it at 10 with 4:34 to go on a heads-up play by DeQuan Dallas. Austin Thomas turned a pass into a 48-yard gain, but Julia Thompson-Clay forced a fumble that Dallas recovered in the end zone. On the first play of the ensuing possession, UT-Martin’s Marquez Garyson coughed it up and Murray’s Lamont Crittendon recovered at the Skyhawks’ 25.

The Racers ground out yardage and wound down the clock, covering 16 yards in seven plays to set up the kick with six seconds left.

› Tennessee State 45, Eastern Kentucky 21

Michael Hughes passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, and Tennessee State (4-2, 1-2) scored the final 28 points of the game to run away in the final seven minutes.

The Tigers returned three intercepti­ons for touchdowns in that span, with Vincent Sellers getting two of the scores.

Eastern Kentucky is 1-4, 1-2.

› Eastern Illinois 24, Tennessee Tech 23

CHARLESTON, Ill. — Bud Martin connected with Alexander Hollins for three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score midway through the fourth quarter, as Eastern Illinois held off winless Tennessee Tech.

Eastern Illinois (4-2, 3-0 OVC) trailed most of the game but took the lead with Hollins’ third touchdown grab to make it 24-20 with 10:47 left to play. Tennessee Tech (0-6, 0-3) then drove 63 yards to set up a 33-yard field goal by Nick Madonia to make it a one-point game.

SEWANEE, Tenn. — The first night game on the Tigers’ historic field went the way of the 24th-ranked Division III visitors in the Southern Athletic Associatio­n game, as former Ringgold High School star Slade Dale was 12-for-18 for 148 passing yards and two touchdowns and ran nine times for 126 yards and a 12-yard score for Berry (6-0, 4-0).

Sewanee (2-4, 1-3) scored all its points in the fourth quarter, on a 27-yard field goal and an extra-point kick by Michael Jacobs and a 27-yard TD pass from Sam Hearn to Sam Everette. Hearn was 3-for8 for 54 yards, with an intercepti­on; Alex Darras was 12-of-22 for 90 yards. Cyrus McCullough caught five passes for 44 yards.
