Miami’s Walton out for season

- WIRE REPORTS

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami running back Mark Walton’s season is over, with the 11th-ranked Hurricanes saying Sunday that their leading rusher will need surgery on his right ankle later this week. Walton got hurt during Saturday’s win at Florida State. Miami coach Mark Richt would not divulge specifics about the injury. Walton leads Miami with 428 yards on the ground this season and has scored three touchdowns. Travis Homer (25 carries, 207 yards, three touchdowns) now figures to become the starter. He had two big runs on what became Miami’s winning drive at Florida State, playing after Walton went down earlier in the fourth quarter. The only other running back with a carry for Miami in 2017 is Trayone Gray, who has four for 34 yards. Moving allpurpose player Deejay Dallas to running back is a possibility.

› LEXINGTON, Ky. — University of Kentucky reserve quarterback Luke Wright said on his Twitter account that examinations “all came back good” after he collapsed on the sideline Saturday night during the Wildcats’ 40-34 victory over Missouri. Wright is a junior who began his career at Cincinnati before transferring to Kentucky after his freshman season. He started for the Wildcats last fall against Austin Peay but hadn’t played this season. He collapsed with about 9 1/2 minutes remaining in the game. Play was stopped for several minutes and players from both teams knelt in prayer on the field in a silent stadium as medical personnel treated the 6-foot-4 Atlanta native. Wright was applauded as he was carried off the sideline on a stretcher. Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said afterward “that was very scary for all of us,” but added that Wright was responsive. Stoops did not elaborate on what caused the player to collapse. Wright tweeted early Sunday that he was fine and thanked everyone for their prayers after the scary moment.

› ARLINGTON, Texas — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones

said the NFL can’t leave the impression it tolerates players disrespecting the flag and that anyone on his team making such displays won’t play. Jones had his strongest comments so far on the anthem controversy Sunday night. They started with his response to a question about Vice President Mike Pence

leaving the game in Indianapolis after about a dozen San Francisco players knelt during the anthem. Jones said after the Cowboys’ 35-31 loss to Green Bay that the league can’t “in any way give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag.” Of his own players, the Hall of Famer said, “If we are disrespecting the flag, then we won’t play. Period.” The Cowboys knelt arm-in-arm before the national anthem when they played at Arizona two weeks ago. Players, coaches and others, including Jones and his family, were among those in the line. All of them stood during the anthem, with arms still locked.
