Reeds, Strings & Hammers

Music for clarinet, violin and piano at UTC Fine Arts Center tonight

- STAFF REPORT

A program of music paying homage to musicians who helped create a body of repertoire for clarinet, violin and piano will be presented by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Department of Performing Arts tonight, Oct.12.

“Reeds, Strings & Hammers: Music for Clarinet, Violin and Piano” will begin at 7:30 p.m in the UTC Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St. There is no admission fee. Featured performers will be Wendy Case, Tim Hinck and Nikolasa Tejero.

The trio of musicians will play work by clarinetists Benny Goodman and Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr and violinists Joseph Szigeti and Walter Verdehr in a diverse program that blurs the stylistic line between concert and popular music idioms.

Also presented will be Darius Milhaud’s Suite, Op. 157, which bears strong influences of Brazilian folklore and American jazz, and Scott McAllister’s “X3,” which channels heavy metal rock, including a quotation of the ostinato from Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water.” Gian Carlo Menotti’s “Trio” embraces the composer’s Italian roots and affinity for the Italian operatic tradition.
