A new take on ‘Sleepy Hollow’

Cumberland County Playhouse premieres new musical

- STAFF REPORT

Cumberland County Playhouse will present a new musical version of “Sleepy Hollow” by Tony Award nominees Hunter Foster and Paul Gordon beginning Friday, Oct. 13.

“We’re thrilled to give our Playhouse audiences the very first look at this exciting new show,” says Producing Director Bryce McDonald. “And it’s a perfect choice for the Halloween season.”

“Sleepy Hollow” is a bold new take on Washington Irving’s familiar story. Schoolmaster Ichabod Crane, played by Blake Graham at the Playhouse, has left his home in Boston to teach the children of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.

But he soon learns that all is not what it seems in the quiet little town. People are disappearing one by one and legend has it that the victims are being taken by a Headless Horseman.

The town, wary of any outsiders, becomes fearful of the books and teachings Ichabod brings to the village. When Ichabod falls in love with Katrina Van Tassel, played by Harli Cooper, their blossoming romance ultimately leads to jealousy, mistrust and finally betrayal, as we learn that some of the darkest monsters are the ones that lie within.

The cast of “Sleepy Hollow” also includes Britt Hancock as Brom Van Brunt, Weslie Webster as Henriette Van Brunt, Jason Ross as Baltus Van Tassel, Daniel Black as Charles Claassen and Caitlin Schaub as Marie Claassen.

Also, Lauren Marshall as Xandra Vos, Brett Mutter as Constable Vos and Michael Ruff as Ellis. Young actors David Kappel and Robert Walker will alternate in the pivotal role of Pieter Claassen.

“Sleepy Hollow” is directed by John Fionte, with musical direction by Ron Murphy. The musical features a new book by Hunter Foster, and new music and lyrics by Paul Gordon.

“Sleepy Hollow” runs through Saturday, Nov. 11, and is rated PG.
