Stocks closed modestly lower Thursday, pulling back from their record highs. Financial companies posted among the biggest losses as investors shrugged at quarterly reports from a few big banks. A slide in big media stocks, clothing companies and other retailers also pulled the market lower. Energy companies finished lower as crude oil prices declined. Industrial and transportation companies like railroads did better than the rest of the market.
