-

Boy Scout Troop 43, which meets at Dalewood Middle School, recently had three Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle, making 38 Scouts from this troop who have achieved the prestigious Scouting award. Larry E. Bowie is Scoutmaster of Troop 43.

› Deonte Q. Carter, son of Patrick Carter and grandson of Linda Cox Carter, became an Eagle Scout during a Court of Honor held in the EPB community room.

The 2017 graduate of Tyner High School, where he was co-captain of the soccer team, is a freshman at Tusculum College, pursuing a dual major in sports management and business administration.

He is his church’s youth pulpit director, member of Chattanooga Links Beautillion and an academics tutor and soccer volunteer at Glenwood Community Center.

For the community-service project required of every Eagle Scout candidate, he refurbished and painted 21 rusted, peeling fire hydrants in the historic Orchard Knob neighborhood. Materials and safety vests were donated by Tennessee American Water Co. The brightly painted hydrants will help firefighters locate and use them in a timely manner.

Two more Scouts from Troop 43 became Eagles during a Court of Honor held at New City Fellowship Church.

› Jonathan M. Young, son of Tonya M. Young, is a graduate of STEM School of Chattanooga and a freshman at Middle Tennessee State University, majoring in business administration,

While at the STEM School, Young was a member of the robotics team, track and field team, participated in the school’s Volkswagen Camp to become Auto Cad certified and was a member of the youth Kappa Leadership League of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

For his Eagle service project, he installed a handrail for an elderly and impaired woman to hold onto between her house and carport, wrapping it around an existing fence to support her. He also adjusted the security door and yard gates to improve her safety and security.

› Darrell J. Harris Jr., nephew of Cynthia R. Buford and grandson of Norma Dean Ansley, is a senior at the STEM School of Chattanooga.

He is active in the school’s Project Based Learning program, in which students work in small groups on projects and present ideas to promote or enhance a service or products for companies such as Volkswagen, Unum, Creative Discovery Museum and Hunter Museum of American Art. Participation in PBL helps students apply what they learn as it relates to math, science and English. Harris is also an ordained deacon and youth Bible study leader at his church, Greater Nazarene Baptist.

For his Eagle service project, Harris restored, refurbished and painted his church’s fellowship hall and kitchen.
