Lady Flames win by 19 shots

The Lee University women’s golf team won the 16-team LeeAnn Noble Memorial tournament Monday and Tuesday at Dahlonega, Ga., by 19 shots with a 586, and Lee’s Haverly Harrold was the medalist by three strokes with a 1-under-par 143. The Lady Flames’ Sam Burrus and Annika Gino shared fifth place at 148 and joined Harrold on the all-tournament team. Brooke Benedetto and Anne Hedegaard tied for ninth at 151 (Benedetto as an individual), and Caroline Moore tied for 13th at 152.

› The Dalton State men’s golf team, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, had the top four finishers in repeating its Bojangles Tennessee Intercollegiate title Tuesday at Tennessee National in Loudon. The Roadrunners shot 7-under 569 and won by 37 strokes. S.M. Lee edged teammate Chase Cole in a playoff for medalist after they tied at 142, and P.J. Shields and Sport Allmond tied for third at 143.

› Although Phillip Hickam tied for seventh in the field at 217, the UTC men’s golf team shot a final-round 298 Tuesday and tied for ninth at 889 in the 16-team Autotrader Intercollegiate tournament at Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga. Georgia Southern won by 24 strokes with an 847. UTC’s Etienne Brault and Luke Long shot 221 and 224. Finishing first among those who played as individuals, the Mocs’ Lake Johnson tied for 14th overall at 219.

› The 16th-ranked Lee men wound up seventh out of 15 teams — 11 of them ranked in NCAA Division II — in the Copperhead Championship at Innisbrook, Fla. Lee’s Scott Odell, Dylan Lillard and Evan Spence were 24th, tied for 25th and tied for 27th at 219, 220 and 221.

› Jerry Wilson of Rock Spring, Ga., won the Super Pro class and $2,500 in the drag races last Saturday at Brainerd Motorsports Park. He won with a 4.70-second burst on a 4.69 dial in a dragster with a modified 454 Chevrolet big-block engine. Jeff Burleson of Gaylesville, Ala., was second in a 1967 Chevy Nova II. L.C. Bigham added to his 500-plus wins at the strip by taking the Foot Brake class with a 9.68 run on a 9.67 dial in a 1966 Plymouth; Melvin Croft was second in a 1987 Dodge Ramcharger. Lawson Saine was the Junior Dragster winner with fellow LaFayette resident Bryson Kaiser second, and Tim Ford of Knoxville won the Motorcycle 5.60 class with John Markham of Bowling Green, Ky., second. Hugh Harris of Ringgold had the low elapsed time (4.59) and fastest speed (159 mph) of the meet in the Madaris Windows dragster.

› UTC freshman Chloe Arnold was chosen the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s women’s soccer player of the week for her three goals in a 3-2 overtime win over The Citadel.

› Lee midfielder Jared McWhorter was the Gulf South Conference men’s soccer freshman of the week for his two goals in the Flames’ 1-0-1 weekend road trip.

› Bryan junior Charlie Clarke was the TSWA men’s player of the week for the second time this season after his assist against Milligan and four goals in a 6-3 win at Montreat. He added two goals Tuesday night in a 4-2 Appalachian Athletic Conference win over visiting Truett McConnell and now has 16 goals and six assists for the Lions (11-5, 7-1), who also on Tuesday got goals from Brad Spooner and Arthur Dombrowski and two assists from Kevin Roenpage. Bryan’s first-place Lady Lions (10-4, 8-2) edged TMU 1-0 on Johanna Rappe’s goal from a Makena Giles assist at 72:05. Morgana Hardt da Silva made eight saves in the shutout.

› The Tennessee Wesleyan women’s soccer team, second in the AAC at 6-1-2, lost 4-1 in a nonconference home game against 22nd-ranked Georgia Gwinnett. Nicole Broderick scored for TWU (7-4-2) from a Chloe Rootes assist; Ana Gonzalez netted two goals and Caitlin Berry had a goal and an assist for Gwinnett (10-3-1).

› Covenant College lost 1-0 in USA South men’s soccer Tuesday at Huntingdon, leaving the Scots 6-10-1, 2-5-1 in the league. A goal midway through the first half stood up as the difference in the second consecutive win for the Hawks (2-11-1, 2-7).
