Female golf Mocs move up to fifth

The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a women golfers moved up a spot to fifth at 601 in the 17-team Palmetto Intercolle­giate tournament with a 297 Monday at Kiawah Island, S.C. The Mocs are one shot behind Old Dominion and only 11 behind leader Kennesaw State going into the final round. UTC’s Cristina Perez is tied for 10th individual­ly at 148, and Holly Morgan and Maddy McDaniel are tied for 19th at 151 with Monica San Juan at 153 and Megan Woods at 156.

› The Georgia Northweste­rn men were ninth at 312 after the first 18 holes of the 13-team Chick-fil-A Invitation­al at Stonebridg­e Golf Club in Rome, Ga. The field mostly is NCAA teams, including Covenant in 12th at 316. Oglethorpe led at 286 going into the suspended second round. Branton Bailey shot 76, Lane Strickland 77, Adrian Clark 78 and Cole Roberts 81 for GNTC. Nathan Hawkins and Marshall Kent shot 76s and Josh Wall had an 81 for Covenant.

TENNIS

› Two Chattanoog­a teams won USTA state championsh­ips this past weekend in Knoxville, and Tony Bartley and Randy Johnston were involved in both. Bartley is captain of the 55-over men’s 7.5 combo team that went 6-0 and did not lose an individual match, and other players besides Johnston were Dan Berry, Ken Ellinger, Raymond Rich, Dave Dameron, Don Rutledge, Kirk Kelly, Pete Nowotarski, Terry Bartley, Tom McCullough and Charlie Smith. They qualified for the Southern Sectionals to be held March 2-4 in Mobile, Ala. Going to Mobile for March 9-12 sectional play is the 18-over men’s 7.5 combo group with David Snyder and Johnston as captains and Michael Rollins, Rommel Ramos, Joe Brown, Dwight Hilley, John Gibson, Francis Vasquez, Blake Savard, Robert Moss, Andy Johnson and Tony Bartley as other players. They were 4-0 in Knoxville.

AUTO RACING

› Brainerd Motorsport­s Park had 85 cars entered in seven drag-race classes using onelight pro starts Saturday, and the winners included Dustin Martin from Loudon, Tenn.; Josh Cunningham from Clinton; Jeff Moses from Madisonvil­le; Adam Turner of Woodstock, Ga., and Billy Smith of Ringgold. Shane Stack won the LDR class with a 4.87-second run, with James Sikes second. With a 4.711 run in a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, Martin got $3,000 for winning by inches over Charleston’s Stacy Roderick in a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray (4.716). Cunningham won the 5.70 title with Ricky Millard Jr. second, Moses won the 6.0 with Kole Pritchett second, Turner won the Easy Street class with Braxton Hopkins second and Smith won in Limited Street with Jarrod Hicks second. The strip returns to regular bracket racing this Saturday.

FOOTBALL

› Sewanee senior defensive back John Cleveland was the Southern Athletic Associatio­n football defensive player of the week for his 10 solo tackles, three assisted tackles, two intercepti­ons and forced fumble in Saturday’s loss to Trinity. He has five pickoffs this season, tied for most in the SAA with freshman teammate William Phillips.

SOCCER

› The Covenant College women’s soccer game scheduled Monday night against Emory was canceled because of wet field conditions, giving the Lady Scots a final regular-season record of 10-6. They begin USA South tournament play Wednesday at 4 p.m. as the West Division third seed, hosting sixth seed Wesleyan of Macon, Ga. The winner will play Saturday at Piedmont.

› Maryville College forward Shannon Reagan from Tullahoma was the USA South women’s soccer player of the week for her goal in a 2-0 win over Covenant and three goals and an assist against LaGrange.

VOLLEYBALL

› Covenant sophomore Emily Moore made it a family trifecta as a USA South volleyball player of the week this season, following older sisters Ginny and Schuyler. Emily was the defensive honoree for last week’s matches, when the Lady Scots went 3-0 and she had 18, 17 and 25 digs.

› The first-year Cleveland State volleyball team improved to 14-5 for the season with a 3-1 home win Monday over The Crown College.
