Bryan players NAIA honorees

Bryan College’s Charlie Clarke and

Stephen Ricketts were selected the NAIA national soccer players of the week after earning Appalachia­n Athletic Confernce honors for their part in two victories over ranked opponents last week. Clarke, a junior forward, scored three goals and both game-winners and has 17 for the season, and senior Ricketts led the back line as the Lions allowed only one goal in the 2-0 week. They won 2-1 Tuesday at Point with goals from Arthur Dombrowski and Jonathan Ricketts and assists by Jason Ward and Joe Goreham. Bryan is 13-5, 9-1.

› Bryan senior goalkeeper Morgana Hardt Da Silva was the AAC women’s soccer defensive player of the week for her eight saves in a 1-0 shutout of Truett McConnell, and she had three in a 1-0 overtime win Tuesday at Point. Yarahi Hernandez scored at 108:40 for Bryan (11-4, 9-2), which outshot the hosts 21-9.

› Tennessee Wesleyan senior Nicole Broderick was the AAC women’s offensive player of the week for her five goals in two wins, and she added two from assists by

Siobhan Patterson in Tuesday’s 4-0 nonconfere­nce win. Lauren Cunningham and

Emiley Saddler also scored for the Lady Bulldogs (9-4-2), assisted by Dayna Randall and Chloe Rootes.

› The Sewanee soccer teams are hosting Southern Athletic Associatio­n tournament quartefina­ls Saturday. Sewanee’s men are seeded third and play Millsaps at 1 p.m. EDT, and the fourth-seeded Sewanee women will face No. 5 seed Berry at 3:30.

› For the third weekend in a row, the local Premier Soccer Academy headed by

Pedro Kozak won two championsh­ips at a tournament. This time it was at the Life Storage Kicks Invitation­al at Huntsville, Ala. The PSA Predator went 3-0 with a 15-1 goal differenti­al for the under-15 title, and the under-18 PSA River Plate won a U-19 division with a 3-0-1 record. Kevin Stophel and George Coogan are assistant coaches for Kozak.

GOLF

› The Lee University men’s golf team, ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II, tied for third in the West Georgia Matt Dyas Invitation­al tournament Tuesday in Carrollton. At 583 the Flames were only one shot behind Clayton State, which edged Young Harris in a scorecard playoff for the team title. Lee’s Matt Johnson and Scott Odell tied for 10th individual­ly at 145, and Dylan Lillard tied for 17th at 147. Corey Sheppard shot 150.

› Led by a final-round 4-under 68 from

Haverly Harrold, the Lee women recorded the second lowest round in program history Tuesday, 293, and finished fourth at 596 in the 18-team Flagler Fall Slam at St. Augustine, Fla. Harrold tied for fifth at 144 and was all-tournament, while Sam Burrus and

Annika Gino tied for 14th at 149. Barry was the team winner at 585.

› Senior Alexander Riddle from Notre Dame High School led Tennessee Tech to a runner-up finish Monday and Tuesday at the Samford Intercolle­giate at Birmingham’s Greystone club. Riddle tied for fourth individual­ly and was all-tournament at 216. Freshman Bracton Womack from McMinnvill­e was ninth at 220.

› Georgia Northweste­rn finished eighth at 912 with a final-round 297 Tuesday in the Chick-fil-A men’s tournament at Stonebridg­e Golf Club in Rome, and Covenant was 12th at 947 in the 13-team field. GNTC’s Branton Bailey tied for 11th at 220 and Lane Strickland shared 14th at 222. Covenant’s Scott Wall shot 231.

VOLLEYBALL

› Covenant College completed a perfect USA South volleyball regular season with a 3-0 win Tuesday at Berea. The set scores were 25-15, 25-10, 25-20. Schuyler Moore had 35 assists and Ginny Moore and Allie Jakes had nine kills for the Lady Scots (197, 12-0), Ginny also with seven aces. Alexa Spurling had eight kills, Jessica Seehorn four aces and Emily Moore 10 digs.

› Bluefield won 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22) in AAC volleyball at Bryan with four players contributi­ng nine to 16 kills. Brooke Stowell led Bryan with eight, while Veronica Salas had 21 assists and 19 digs, Kristen Parrish 41 digs and Sidney Pierce 13 assists.
