Soccer Mocs fall to UNCG in SoCon quarterfinal
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga soccer season ended Saturday night with a 2-0 loss at UNC Greensboro in a Southern Conference women’s tournament quarterfinal.
The teams had played to a 0-0 draw earlier this month, but this time the third-seeded Spartans (9-7-3) had a 15-4 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Cienna Rideout headed in a pass from Hannah Hoeksema late in the first half and Melanie Spensiero scored from a Heida Vidarsdottir assist in the 64th minute.
UTC, the sixth seed in the tournament, finished 5-10-4.
“Tough end to the season. UNCG played well tonight and made things difficult for us,” Mocs coach Gavin McKinney said in a release. “We are very proud of the spirit our group displayed. We fought until the end.”
› At Demorest, Ga., the Covenant College men smacked West No. 2 seed Piedmont 3-0 in a USA South tournament quarterfinal Saturday, and the Covenant women also got by Piedmont (15-0-4) but needed a 4-3 edge in penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie through two overtimes.
Elsa Woody’s PK became the difference when the Lady Scots’ all-conference Rachel Lemay saved Piedmont’s final try. Addy Cronan, Callie Bader and Molly Kate McClearn hit the earlier PKs for Covenant (11-6-1), which will face Methodist in a semifinal Friday. Bader had scored 24:15 into the game.
Carl Simakoff, Anthony Buzzeo and Matt Morefield scored goals and Parker Owen and Josh Brower had assists for the Scots (9-11-1), who play overall top seed North Carolina Wesleyan this Friday in the semifinals at Rocky Mount, N.C.
› At Sewanee, Tenn., the Sewanee women edged Berry 2-1 but the men’s team lost 4-1 to Millsaps in Southern Athletic Association quarterfinals. Kyle Johnston scored from an Andrew Turk assist for Sewanee’s men (8-8).
All the women’s scores came in the first 14:10. Fourth-seeded Sewanee (6-8-2) led 2-0 just 5:15 in, on goals by Kiley Ezzell, assisted by Elizabeth McKnight, and Mary Frank, assisted by Dayla LaRocque and Ezzell. Savannah Williams made six saves for the Tigers, who play Friday at No. 1 seed Centre.
› At Montgomery, Ala., Dalton State beat the Faulkner men 2-0 and downed the Faulker women 3-1 in a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Jorge Hurtado and Justice Nmeregini scored second-half goals for the NAIA’s 19th-ranked Roadrunners (12-3-1, 5-2), Hurtado’s assisted by Santiago Moore. The Lady Roadrunners (8-6-1, 2-5) netted all three of theirs after halftime, two by Rosie Lindo and the third by Keyle Snyder, who assisted on Lindo’s first. Rachel Hardin made 14 saves.
› At Athens, Tenn., Tennessee Wesleyan beat the Point women 5-0 and trounced the Point men 6-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference matches. The TWU men scored five of their goals in the last 32 minutes.
Siobhan Patteron and Nicole Broderick each scored two goals and Livia Walker had the other for the Lady Bulldogs (10-4-2, 8-12), who outshot Point 26-0. Yuri Parisotto had a hat trick, Gabriel Gonzalez a goal and two assists and Tyler Robertson a goal and one assist for the Bulldogs (10-5-1, 5-4), whose shots margin was 19-5. Spencer Asamoah also scored.
