UTC golfers 2nd at Kiawah Island

Led by Lake Johnson’s 3-under-par 69 and Luke Long’s 70, the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a men’s golf team moved up a spot to second in the 15-team East Bay Deli Classic with a 285 on Monday at Kiawah Island, S.C. That was 24 shots better than Sunday’s tough-weather round on the Turtle Point Course. UTC’s

Andrew Weathers shot 74 and is tied for sixth in the medalist race at 147, while Johnson is tied for 10th at 148 and Long is tied for 22nd at 152. Playing as individual­s, Oliver Simonsen (73) and Will Porter

(71) share 32nd at 155. They are one shot ahead of Etienne Brault, Phillip Hickam and individual A.J. Lintunen, and

Connor Nolan improved by 16 strokes with his 72. UTC is at 594, 10 shots behind 26th-ranked team leader Tennessee. The Volunteers’ Rhys Nevin-Wharton and

Lorenzo Scalise share the individual lead at 145, and Sean Wilcox and Spencer Cross are at 147.

› UTC’s women golfers are 10th after an aggregate 613 for 36 holes Monday in the Trinity Forest Invitation­al in Dallas. The Mocs’ Megan Woods is tied for 24th at 151,

Cristina Perez is tied for 37th at 154 and

Monica San Juan and Maddy McDaniel also are in the top 50 at 156 and 157. All 13 teams in the field are ranked in the top 80 nationally, with eight in the top 45. No. 27 Houston leads at 586; Tennessee is third at 594 with Chattanoog­a’s Blakesly Warren at 152.

› Marshall Kent’s 74 led Covenant College to second place at 310, 10 shots behind Bob Jones University, in the first round of the Eagle Invitation­al at Nob North Golf Course. Kent is one stroke out of the lead, and the Scots’ Matthew Harvie is eighth at 78 with Nathan Hawkins and Josh Wall tied for ninth at 79.

› Georgia Northweste­rn’s golf team won a three-way match Sunday and Monday at the Dogwood Hills and Goose Pond Colony courses in northeaste­rn Alabama by 14 strokes over Northeast Alabama Community College, 639-652. Marion Military withdrew due to Sunday’s weather. Branton Bailey shot 158 and Lane Strickland and David Manis had 160 totals for GNTC.

TENNIS

› Chattanoog­a’s Wesley Cash helped the United States get its win in an opening 2-1 loss to Mexico in the World ITF Men’s 60 tournament in Miami. He and Ross Persons from Houston won 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in doubles Monday morning after Persons and Atlanta’s Max Buyckx lost singles matches Sunday despite multiple match points in their favor. The U.S. today plays Brazil, which defeated Mexico 2-1 on Monday.

BASKETBALL

› Sean Chisolm was 17-of-22 from the field in totaling 38 points and nine rebounds as the NAIA’s sixth-ranked Dalton State Roadrunner­s opened their basketball season with a 94-76 home win Monday against Carver College. Reed Dungan had 17 points and seven rebounds and Isaiah Box had 16 points, eight assists and six steals.

› Amber Levi scored 17 points and Deandra Luna had 14 points and nine assists as the Bryan College women’s basketball team opened its season Monday with a 95-71 home win over Fisk. Keneisha Love also scored 14 points and Shayla Ludy added 13 for the Lady Lions, while Tonesha Allison had 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals witih nine points. Lashae Brown scored 22 with five 3-point baskets for Fisk. The Bryan men are 3-0 after winning 82-68 at Hiwassee.

SOFTBALL

› The Lady Moc RBI Club will meet Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at UTC’s indoor softball facility at Warner Park, and the public is invited.
