Former Titans receiver Mason charged with felony domestic assault
NASHVILLE — Derrick Mason, a wide receiver who played 15 seasons in the NFL, has been charged with felony aggravated domestic assault and misdemeanor vandalism.
Metro Nashville Police say in a news release that the 43-year-old Mason turned himself in Monday night. It wasn’t known if he had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
Police say a 43-yearold woman told detectives Monday morning that Mason grabbed her by the neck and hit her in the stomach when she told him that she no longer wanted to be in a relationship with him. Detectives noted bruising on her right upper arm, a red mark on her neck and a scratch on top of her hand, along with a hole in a door.
Mason started with Tennessee before six seasons in Baltimore, and he split 12 games between the Jets and Texans in his final season in 2011.
Patriots trade Garoppolo to 49ers for 2nd-round pick
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Jimmy Garoppolo sat down on the dais in between San Francisco general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan, leaned into the microphone and thanked the 49ers and the New England Patriots for the trade that gives him a chance to be a starter in the NFL.
“Kyle will tell you a great quality in a quarterback is taking charge,” Lynch said. “I thought I was going to go first.”
After waiting 3 1/2 years as Tom Brady’s backup in New England, Garoppolo is ready to have the chance to be the starting quarterback of his own team after being traded to San Francisco for a 2018 second-round draft pick.
Garoppolo started two games during his time with the Patriots and has thrown just four passes since getting hurt in his second start in Week 2 of the 2016 season.
“I’m eager to get out there and show what I can do on a Sunday,” Garoppolo said. “This league is tough. It really is. When you get your opportunity, you have to take advantage of it because you don’t know when you’ll get another.”
Eagles get Miami’s Ajayi for draft pick
PHILADELPHIA — The NFL-leading Eagles bolstered their running attack Tuesday, acquiring Jay Ajayi from the Miami Dolphins for a 2018 fourthround draft pick hours before the trade deadline.
Ajayi has 465 yards rushing and is averaging 3.4 yards per carry with no touchdowns. He went to the Pro Bowl last season after running for 1,272 yards, including three 200yard games.
“We like our running back group,” Eagles vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said. “This was an opportunity that came to us, a good player who could add to our team. He’s a young player who is under contract for the next couple years.”
Dolphins coach Adam Gase signaled his displeasure with Ajayi last week after Miami was routed 40-0 at Baltimore, noting missed blocking assignments in pass protection.
Logano’s crew chief takes blame for call
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Joey Logano’s crew chief accepted blame Tuesday for not pitting Logano with a tire rub, a call that may have cost Team Penske teammate Brad Keselowski a spot in NASCAR’s championship.
Logano was third with 12 laps remaining in Sunday’s race at Martinsville Speedway when contact with Kyle Busch created a tire rub on Logano’s car. Keselowski was leading and seemed to have the victory in hand, and the win would have earned Keselowski a slot in the season finale championship race.
But Logano was not called in to pit, the tire blew and he spun. It brought out a caution that ultimately led to Keselowski not winning the race.
