Broderick, Bryan crowd honored

Tennessee Wesleyan’s Nicole Broderick was honored Wednesday as the overall women’s soccer player of the year and Golden Boot winner in the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference, and regular-season champion Bryan College swept the other individual awards with Ruth Rosales as offensive player of the year Morgana Hardt da Silva as the defensive player, Makena Giles as freshman of the year and Paul Babba as coach of the year. The four honored players made the All-AAC first team along with TWU’s Emiley Saddler and Els van Hooijdonk and Bryan’s Polly Holt, and TWU’s Lauren Cunningham, McKenna Loges and Dayna Randall and Bryan’s Paige Klose and Johanna Rappe were second-team picks. Saddler and Bryan’s Hannah Bohner were Champions of Character choices.

› Bryan junior Charlie Clarke was the 2017 AAC men’s offensive player of the year, Lions senior Stephen Ricketts was the defensive player of the year, Tennessee Wesleyan’s Yuri Parisotto was the freshman of the year and former Bryan player and coach Joey Johnson of regular-season champion Reinhardt was the coach of the year. Joao Costa of Truett McConnell was voted overall player of the year. Clarke won the Golden Boot winner for his 12 goals in nine AAC games, and he and Ricketts were joined on the All-AAC first team by Bryan’s Dino Jones, Kevin Roenpage, Brad Spooner and Jason Ward and TWU’s Nick Croucher and Ben Timms. Jonathan Ricketts. Stephen Ricketts and TWU’s Kyle Wynne were Champions of Character picks.

› Dalton State lost 2-1 to ninth-ranked Mobilein a Southern States Athletic Conference men’s soccer tournament semifinal Wednesday night in Montgomery, Ala. All the scoring was in the first half, and Mobile (12-3-2) had only a 9-8 edge in shots but a 6-2 margin in those on goal. Isael Gutierrez scored for the Roadrunner­s (12-4-2) from an assist by Santiago Moore, who made the All-SSAC first team and received the league’s Golden Boot award for his five goals in conference play. Samuel Fraire were second-team All-SSAC, and Fraire and Kevin Villatoro made the all-freshman team. Jorge Hurtado was the DSC representa­tive on the Champions of Character team. VOLLEYBALL

› East Tennessee State defeated the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a volleyball team 3-0 on Wednesday, dropping the Mocs to 13-16 overall and 6-9 in the Southern Conference with their third loss in a row. The set scores were 25-17, 25-18, 25-12. Miranda Elpers had nine kills and 11 digs and Lauren Greenspoon and Madison Bergren had 15 and 10 assists for UTC, which ends its regular season Friday with a 6 p.m. home match against Wofford in Maclellan Gym. Megan Kaufman had 12 digs. ETSU is 16-10, 12-3.

BASKETBALL

› Freshman guard Karli Combs scored 30 points and was 6-of-9 on 3-point shots as the Bryan women’s basketball team set a program record with 15 3s in Tesday’s 95-43 win over Oakwood at Huntsville, Ala. The Lady Lions (2-0) were 15-of-31. Amber Levi scored 19 points with three 3s, and freshman Sarah Cain hit four in her 16 points. Deandra Luna had seven assists in the rout.

GOLF

› Mike Nance of Calhoun and Scott Davenport of Marietta are tied for third at 4-under-par 68 after the first round of the Georgia Senior Four-Ball golf tournament at Sunset Country Club in Moultrie. Two duos shot 66s on Wednesday: Savannah’s Jack Hall and Doug Hanzel and Macon’s Peter Persons and Hal Johnson. Ronnie Cargle of Summervill­e and Ladell Norton of Rome are eighth in the third flight at 78, nine shots out of the lead but only three out of third place.
