Fowl Mouths: Cabela’s hosts duck-calling contest Saturday

- STAFF REPORT

Cabela’s-Fort Oglethorpe is hosting the official Georgia State Duck-Calling Contest and a kids’ calling clinic on Saturday, Nov. 11, along with other activities in conjunction with the company’s semi-annual Hometown Heroes event.

“This sanctioned contest will qualify winners for the World Duck-Calling Championship in Arkansas later this month,” says Philip Sparn, Cabela’s-Fort Oglethorpe marketing manager.

The calling contest is open to the public. Parents are encouraged to bring their kids to learn how to talk duck in the Youth Duck-Calling Clinic. The first 20 kids will receive a free Buck Gardner Duck Call and learn how to call a variety of waterfowl from our expert callers. The kids clinic will begin immediately following the adult contest.

Registration for the duck-calling contest will open at 11 a.m.; competition will start at noon. The calling contest will have three divisions: Main Street, Meat Duck and Two-Man Team. Main Street competitors must be Georgia residents to qualify. For more information or to register, call Jamey Thomas at 706-614-6620.

“We’re excited to hear some of the best duck callers in the Southeast,” says Sparn. “Waterfowl season is just a couple weeks away and the world championships are at the end of the month, so this is a chance for all duck hunters to test their skills before the season gets here and earn a ticket to Stuttgart, Ark.”

As part of the store’s Hometown Heroes event, there will be free demos, activities and discounts for active-duty military personnel, veterans and first responders all weekend.
