HOW THEY SCORED

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Staff writer David Cobb examines the scoring drives from Tennessee’s 50-17 loss to Missouri on Saturday:

-

FIRST QUARTER

MO — Ish Witter 7-yard run (Tucker McCann kick), 9:15 Drive: 8 plays, 82 yards, 2:33 Key play: Missouri hit the Vols with four Witter runs from 9 to 23 yards as it crossed midfield. Witter carried six times on the drive, highlighted by the 23-yard scamper through the center of the defense. MISSOURI 7, TENNESSEE 0

TN — Nigel Warrior 70-yard interception return (Aaron Medley kick), 7:19

Key play: Missouri quarterback Drew Lock stared down his target and never saw Warrior, who hardly had to move to make his first career interception. Warrior showboated at the end of the return and barely made it to the end zone. MISSOURI 7, TENNESSEE 7

MO — Emanuel Hall 31-yard pass from Drew Lock (McCann kick), 4:52 Drive: 8 plays, 75 yards, 2:27 Key play: A third-down pass-interference penalty on cornerback Justin Martin gave the Tigers fresh life on their fourth offensive series of the first quarter. Lock found Hall two plays later. MISSOURI 14, TENNESSEE 7

TN — Medley 48-yard field goal, 1:17

Drive: 9 plays, 45 yards, 3:35 Key play: Tennessee quarterback Will McBride fired up the series with a 16-yard completion to Brandon Johnson on the drive’s opening play. McBride was lucky to avoid an interception on third down before Medley came on for a career-long field goal. MISSOURI 14, TENNESSEE 10

SECOND QUARTER

MO — McCann 41-yard field goal , 7:25

Drive: 12 plays, 60 yards, 3:14 Key play: A 19-yard reception by Larry Rountree moved the chains on third down and put the Tigers in Tennessee territory. The Missouri running back made a defender miss on his shifty catch and run. MISSOURI 17, TENNESSEE 10

TN — Ethan Wolf 19-yard pass from McBride (Medley kick), 1:15

Drive: 15 plays, 66 yards, 6:04

Key play: McBride passed to Johnson for 22 yards on fourth down to set up a first-and-goal. The coaching staff could have elected to try a field goal but instead trusted their true freshman quarterback, and it paid off. MISSOURI 17, TENNESSEE 17 MO — Rountree 1-yard run (McCann kick), 0:18 Drive: 5 plays, 75 yards, 0:57 Key play: Missouri faced a third down in its own territory and appeared content to run out the second-quarter clock when Rountree burst a 64-yard run that set up a momentum-killing score before the half. MISSOURI 24, TENNESSEE 17

THIRD QUARTER

MO — Hall 50-yard pass from Lock (McCann kick), 10:56

Drive: 5 plays, 85 yards, 1:29 Key play: Tennessee had done a decent job subduing Missouri’s aerial attack until Lock launched the bomb over the secondary to put the Tigers up by two scores for the first time. MISSOURI 31, TENNESSEE 17

MO — J’Mon Moore 23-yard pass from Lock (McCann kick), 4:34

Drive: 6 plays, 90 yards, 2:28 Key play: Witter started the drive with a 52-yard run. It was just the latest in a series of gashing runs allowed by Tennessee’s defense that appeared to be wearying as the third quarter wore on. MISSOURI 38, TENNESSEE 17

MO — McCann 23-yard field goal , 2:48

Drive: 6 plays, 22 yards, 0:57 Key play: Missouri’s third scoring possession of the third quarter came courtesy of Tennessee’s first turnover of the game. Anthony Sherils picked off a tipped pass and set up McCann’s field goal.

MISSOURI 41, TENNESSEE 17

FOURTH QUARTER

MO — McCann 38-yard field goal, 14:32

Drive: 10 plays, 29 yards, 3:10

Key play: This time, Kaleb Prewett intercepted McBride with Tennessee still deep in its own territory. A second straight turnover led to a second straight Missouri field goal. MISSOURI 44, TENNESSEE 17

MO — Johnathon Johnson 20-yard pass from Lock (kick blocked), 13:21 Drive: 3 plays, 45 yards, 0:56 Key play: A third consecutive turnover by Tennessee deep in its own territory set up another Missouri score. This time, it was a fumble by running back Carlin Filsaime. MISSOURI 50, TENNESSEE 17
