Lane dual winner at local drag strip
A week after a $7,500 victory at Huntsville, Ala., local drag racer and classic cars dealer Ron Lane won $5,000 in one race and a new 28-foot enclosed trailer in another Saturday at Brainerd Motorports Park. The trailer came with Lane’s victory in the track championship final on a 4.54-second dial in one of his Miller dragsters. Steve Babcock was second. In the Super Pro class Fall Brawl for an IHRA Wally Trophy and the $5,000, Lane turned in a final 4.70 run on a 4.70 dial in his other Miller. The father-son tandem of Mike and Jake Clayton were second and third, Mike with a 4.74 run on a 4.73 dial in a Chevy dragster and 16-year-old Jake with a 4.75 on a 4.74. “It is so nice to come to my home track and sweep the two races,” Lane said. Tony Brock of Barbourville, Ky., won the Foot Brake $2,000 top prize in a 1970 Camaro, and Jake Bull of Newport, Tenn., was second in a 1968 Nova. Carson Emmett of Cedar Bluff, Ala., won the Junior Dragster eliminations with a 7.96 on a 7.95, with Jesse Long of Woodstock, Ga., second at 8.02 on an 8.01 dial. Hugh Harris of Ringgold had the night’s low elapsed time (4.59) and top speed (147.11 mph). The three classes included more than 100 cars.
SOFTBALL
› Meigs County High School senior catcher Aubrey Reed followed through with her commitment to play NCAA Division I softball at Toledo by signing a national letter of intent. She hopes to begin her Toledo career as a three-time TSSAA state champion, as Meigs has won the last two Class A titles. The Best of Preps and all-state first-team selection batted .574 with nine home runs, five triples, 17 doubles, 65 RBIs, 58 runs scored and a school-record 78 hits as a junior, when she set a TSSAA record for most runs scored in a state tournament. She is the longest-tenured player in the Chattanooga-based Fury organization, having started with the Fury’s first 10-under team in 2009.
GOLF
› Chattanooga Christian senior Kylan Nash will be the school’s first African-American athlete to sign a college golf scholarship when she makes her commitment with Tennessee Wesleyan official today at CCS. In addition to earning four letters with the Lady Chargers, the daughter of former University of Tennessee star football receiver Marcus Nash has played on two junior tours the past four seasons and hopes she has encouraged and inspired other girls to enhance diversity in the sport. “I am so honored that Coach (Stan) Harrison and the TWU golf program have given me the opportunity to continue playing this great game of golf at the next level,” Kylan said in a family release.
› Despite three scores in the 70s, Georgia Northwestern is 10th out of 14 teams at 323 after Monday’s first round in the Central Alabama Community College golf tournament at Montgomery. Calhoun CC leads at 294. GNTC’s Branton Bailey is tied for 10th individually at 74, and Cole Roberts and David Manis shot 79.
BASKETBALL
› Cleveland State began TCCAA basketball play this past weekend with a split for the men and two losses for the Lady Cougars in West Tennessee. The Cougars beat Dyersburg State 87-66 as Victor Curry had 25 points and 21 rebounds and Tevin Olison scored 16 points. Olison had 17 points in Saturday’s 78-55 loss at Southwest Tennessee, when Curry had 11 points. Abby Hubert tallied 17 points, Hannah Phillips added 14 and Eboney Kelley grabbed 10 rebounds in the Lady Cougars’ 70-55 loss at Dyersburg, and Kelley had 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting plus eight rebounds and four steals in a 63-60 loss at Southwest. Also in that game, Julia Gaither had nine points, six assists and four steals and Kyla Braden had nine points, seven rebounds and five assists.
VOLLEYBALL
› Point University freshman Te’a Owens from Ridgeland High School had 13 kills and seven digs in the Skyhawks’ 3-2 win over St. Andrews in the Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball tournament last week in Kingsport, Tenn. Point then lost to Reinhardt in the semifinals.
