Man arrested on attempted murder charge

- STAFF REPORT

A Chattanooga man is facing a charge of attempted first-degree murder after he allegedly shot at two people in a car ahead of him while children rode in his own car’s backseat.

Authorities responded to a “person shot” call on Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Roanoke Avenue and Ocoee Street and found a woman suffering from a minor gunshot wound to her back, according to court documents.

The male victim said he and the woman arrived at that location to pick up some of his belongings from an ex-girlfriend there, but Trammell Poindexter, 27, pulled up alongside their car and started an argument.

He said he saw three small children in the back of Poindexter’s car so he tried to pull off, but Poindexter pursued. Both victims said they heard several gunshots coming from the direction of their pursuer as they drove.

The round that struck the woman traveled through the trunk, a toddler seat and the passenger seat until it struck her in the back. The male victim also said Poindexter had threatened to kill him the day before the shooting.

Poindexter has been charged with attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of reckless endangerment and unlawful possession of a firearm. His next court appearance will be before Hamilton County General Sessions Judge Clarence Shattuck.
