Holiday Pop-Up

Shop showcases Chattanooga WorkSpace artists

- BY LISA DENTON STAFF WRITER

Like most of the Open Studio Nights at Chattanooga WorkSpace, Friday was a busy night.

As they do every first Friday, the resident artists and a handful of guest artists were showing off their latest works and providing a glimpse into their artistic process.

Lisa Phillips Denney and Janet Campbell Bradley introduced “Print: A Perspective of Pattern and Color.” The Chattery celebrated its grand opening with family crafts, cider and a special exhibit by Ricardo Chang with Noogaside and Adrienne Sinclaire.

But completed projects weren’t the only sights to see. Ali Kay entertained visitors with 20-minute speed paintings accompanied by music by Rick Rushing.

A Giving Tree was set up for donations to Welcome Home of Chattanooga, a shelter that provides end-of-life care for the homeless.

Dish T’Pass served an assortment of specialties from its kitchen, and a hot chocolate bar produced more steamy treats.

As is typical for these monthly events, personal studios and communal gallery spaces hummed with activity — though December’s perhaps was a bit more festive than usual, as it marked the fifth annual “Deck the Walls” show of art.

And, yes, Friday has come and gone, but don’t despair if you missed the final Open Studio Night of the year. A 12-day Holiday Pop-Up Shop starting Monday will give gift seekers another chance to check names off their lists and support local artists in the process.

Twenty-three artists will have affordable artwork available through- out the pop-up, and Dish T’Pass will add an assortment of fresh-baked treats each day.

“That’s how we entice people,” laughs Chattanooga WorkSpace director Kathy Lennon about the culinary attractions.

Lennon says buyers will be pleased by the selection of gifts available — paintings, photography, jewelry, woven works, mixed media, alcohol inks, paper goods, knitted hats and scarves, music CDs.

Lennon says the pop-up shop is a great place to look for teacher gifts or for a hard-to-buy-for family member or “that person you just want to know you’re thinking about them.”

Best of all, “it’s priced right,” Lennon says. “You’re not going to come in and find stuff you can’t afford.”

The Holiday Pop-Up Shop will be open extended hours, 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m., weekdays through Dec. 19.
