Cleveland State sets inductions

Cleveland State Community College on Tuesday announced eight new selections for its sports hall of fame. They will be inducted in a ceremony Feb. 3 at Cleveland Country Club and honored again that afternoon between basketball games against Jackson State. The new inductees represent Cougars and Lady Cougars teams of the 1980s and 1990s and include Ryan Coe and Doug Beard for baseball, Bethel Hendrix for men’s basketball, Carla Northcutt for women’s basketball, Haley Carroll for softball, C.T. Hardison for tennis, Josh Coley for golf and Tony Fox for meritoriou­s service. Tickets to the ceremony cost $25 and may be bought at mycs. cc/halloffame. For more informatio­n call 423-473-2271.

› Four Covenant College men’s basketball players exceeded 22 points in a 120-110 shootout win over the hosts in the Rhodes Holiday Classic on Tuesday in Memphis. Coupled with their 100-85 victory there Monday against Austin, the Scots (6-3) reached triple digits in back-to-back games for the first time since February 1993. Tuesday, Covenant’s James Mitchell was 9-of17 from 3-point range in scoring 27 points, and he added five assists. Berto Dryden and Caleb Haynes each scored 26 points, Dryden with seven assists and Haynes with nine rebounds, and Patjo Twagirayez­u contribute­d 22 points and 10 rebounds. Bailey Spragg had 10 of the Scots’ 29 assists, and they shot 59 percent from the field and 43 percent on 3s.

› Covenant’s Lady Scots hosted and beat Belhaven 76-68 as four of their starters scored at least 12 points and the other, Joanna Smith, had 12 rebounds and three steals. Kaley Hallmark and Bekah Walter had 19 and 17 points with four assists apiece, Emma Grimes scored 15 and Jessica Bell had 12 points with seven rebounds. Belhaven’s Brittany Ford scored 20 points with six 3-point baskets, and Lauren Brooks had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

› The Bryan College women lost 77-72 at home to Life University despite 18 points from Karli Combs, 17 from Amber Levi and 16 plus 10 assists and seven rebounds from Deandra Luna. Shayla Ludy added 11 points for Bryan (9-5), which shot 35.9 percent from the field compared to 45.6 percent for the visitors. The big difference was the second quarter, when Life (7-5) had a 25-9 scoring advantage. Kennesha Nichols had 17 points with five 3s, 11 rebounds and seven assists in the win.
