Suspect held in officerinvolved shooting
Authorities on Tuesday released a few details about charges handed down in last weekend’s officer-involved shooting in the Flat Branch community in Grundy County, Tenn.
Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum said in an emailed statement that 32-year-old Jacky Wayne Bean, of Soddy-Daisy, is being held without bond until a hearing later this week. Bean, who reportedly aimed a firearm at authorities, was wounded by gunfire from an unidentified Grundy County deputy and has been treated and returned to police custody.
There was no new information, however, on 20-year-old Shelby Comer, who was found dead in Bean’s car after he fled from police and crashed on B Mine Road, south of Coalmont.
An autopsy this week is expected to reveal details of Comer’s death.
Bean is charged with “attempted first-degree murder, evading arrest, three counts of reckless endangerment, DUI [and] violation of the implied consent law,” Shrum said Monday. “More charges are expected later this week.”
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating at the request of 12th Judicial District Attorney General Mike Taylor.
Shrum said the deputy’s name is being withheld and no further information would be released for now.
Bean was arrested early Sunday after a nine-hour manhunt was launched late Saturday in the wake of a pursuit and officer-involved shooting on B Mine Road, Shrum said.
Shrum said over the weekend that the shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. CST Saturday after a pursuit, which
ended temporarily on B Mine Road before shots were fired and the driver fled again.
According to the TBI, preliminary information indicates Bean pointed a firearm at the deputy, who then fired into the vehicle several times.
The vehicle, which was facing the deputy’s vehicle at the time of the shooting, sped away and sideswiped the deputy’s cruiser. Deputies attempted to pursue the vehicle but quickly lost sight of it, officials said.
About 20 minutes later, a passerby happened to see the suspect vehicle crashed off of the side of B Mine Road, TBI officials said. Authorities said Bean approached the passerby and said he had been shot and needed help. He asked for the other person’s vehicle, but the passerby drove away and called law enforcement instead.
When officers arrived, however, Bean already had fled and a woman’s body, later identified as Comer, was found inside the vehicle. Bean was captured several hours later near that location.
Since word got out about the discovery Saturday of Comer’s body, her Facebook page has been filled with friends’ expressions of shock and sadness along with photos and memories from her life. Her page’s biography states Comer was a 2016 graduate of Grundy County High School.
