Gordon James featured in CSO chamber concert
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed several horn concertos for Joseph Leutgeb, who was considered the pre-eminent horn player of the late 17th century. Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4, completed in 1786, was among them. Its difficult passages show the enormous respect Mozart held for Leutgeb’s talent.
More than 230 years later, Gordon James will take on Mozart’s challenging piece when he is featured in the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera’s chamber concert, Mozart & Schubert, on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 14, at Chattanooga State Community College. The concert, conducted by Kayoko Dan, will also include Kuhlau’s Magic Harp Overture and Schubert’s Symphony No. 6.
“Our CSO principal French horn, Gordon James, will be prominently featured in Mozart’s Horn Concerto. Mozart’s horn concerto is known for being lively, vivacious and challenging, while Schubert’s Symphony No. 6 is very melodic and charming with a light finale,” says Andre Charitat, CSO marketing and communications manager.
“Overall, this is going to be a fun concert that both avid symphony fans and those who are new to classical music will love,” he says. “This is definitely a concert I’d recommend to anyone who has been interested in seeing a symphony performance but has yet to go to one.”
The CSO’s regular venue for its chamber series, the Read House Silver Ballroom, is undergoing renovations. Chattanooga State’s Humanities Theatre offers seating for up to 300 with a raised stage that allows all patrons good sightlines to see the musicians from their seats.
