Landry first as scores remain low

-

LA QUINTA, Calif. — Andrew Landry topped the crowded CareerBuilder Challenge leaderboard after another low-scoring day in the sunny Coachella Valley.

Landry shot a 7-under-par 65 Friday on PGA West’s Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course to reach 16 under. He opened with a 63 Thursday at La Quinta Country Club.

“Wind was down again,” Landry said. “It’s like a dome out here.”

Jon Rahm, the first-round leader after a 62 at La Quinta, was a stroke back. He had two early bogeys in a 67 on the Nicklaus layout.

Jason Kokrak was 14 under after a 67 at Nicklaus, while two-time major champion Zach Johnson (64) was 13 under along with Michael Kim (64) and Martin Piller (67). Johnson and Kim played at Nicklaus, with Piller at PGA West’s Stadium Course, which will host everyone in the final round.

Baylor School graduate Harris English (68) was tied for 28th at 9 under, with three other former Red Raiders further back. Keith Mitchell (66) was tied for 36th at 8 under, Stephan Jaeger (73) tied for 137th at par and Luke List (71) tied for 145th at 1 over. Engish, Jaeger and Mitchell played at Nicklaus on Friday, when List was at La Quinta.

Pieters in lead

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Thomas Pieters shot a second-round 65 to take a one-stroke lead at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship as top-ranked Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy moved into contention at the European Tour event.

Johnson followed his ragged firstround 72 with a bogey-free 8-under 64, tied for the low round of the tournament, and was four shots back.

McIlroy, playing his first event since October, finished with an eagle on the par-5 18th and was three shots behind Pieters after a 66. The former world No. 1 is coming off a winless 2017 and plans a busy schedule leading up to the Masters.

Jorge Campillo (64) was second with Ross Fisher (67), Tommy Fleetwood (68) and Alexander Levy (65) another shot back.

Koepka injured

DALLAS — An injury will keep Brooks Koepka out until the Masters.

The 2017 U.S. Open winner is not sure how he injured his left wrist. He was coming off a nine-shot victory at the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament when he noticed discomfort at the Hero World Challenge the first week of December. A month of rest didn’t help, and Koepka said he probably shouldn’t have played this month at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Doctors discovered a partial tear in the tendon, and eight to 12 weeks of rest and therapy are planned. Koepka will miss several big tournaments he planned to play before the Masters — the year’s first major is April 5-8 — including two World Golf Championships.

Stormy weather

SINGAPORE — Chapchai Nirat birdied his first four holes and his last two for a 7-under 64 and the clubhouse lead in the second round of the weather-interrupted Singapore Open.

He also birdied the 14th hole in a flawless round to jump to the top of the leaderboard at 7-under 135 before the threat of lightning suspended play for the second day in a row with half of the 156-player field still to complete the second round.

Sergio Garcia was at 8 under with 10 holes to play. He was tied for second with Kurt Kitayama, who had 16 holes to play, and Shaun Norris, who managed to beat the weather and sign for a 67.
