One man, one guitar
Lew Card debuts new CD
Spring break might have been a vacation last year for Lew Card’s kids, but the trip to Austin, Texas, was a working one for him. At least for several hours. While there, the singer/ songwriter/musician laid down tracks for his latest CD, “Takeout, Vol. 1.”
“I was there for spring break with the kids last March, but I tracked all the songs in about 3 1/2 hours,” he said. “All but one or two were first takes more or less. That’s what I wanted.”
Card said he had worked with James Stevens at East Austin Recording Studios on all of his previous records over 18 years, and he had been communicating with him for months prior to the actual sessions.
“I sent him a bunch of songs from other people and said I wanted this kind of sound,” Card said.
Stevens engineered and co-produced the record, which features just Card on vocals and guitar. Alex Bohannan designed the cover.
Card said the songs were all written over a sixyear period.
“Some were leftovers from the other albums and some just felt like they didn’t need anything other than guitar and vocals,” he said. “They all worked together and I wanted a live representation of the solo show.”
You can see that show, and get a copy of the new CD during a release party Friday night, Jan. 26, at JJ’s Bohemia. The next night, Card will be playing mandolin with Peewee Moore as they open for David Alan Coe at The V on Monteagle.
