Chattanoog­a State rocks Motlow

The Chattanoog­a State men’s basketball team knocked off Volunteer State 89-56 on Friday and then beat nationally sixth-ranked Motlow State 81-66 on Saturday in TCCAA home games.

The third-place Tigers (14-7, 9-3) closed the Friday romp with a 52-23 half and opened the upset of first-place Motlow (15-3, 9-1) with a 50-38 half. Kalin Johnson scored 24 points and A.J. Morris, Maleek Taylor and Raekwon Long added 18, 14 and 11 in Saturday’s win, when Roger Davis had 13 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Rashawn Fredericks had 21 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks for the Bucks, who got 16 points from Isaiah Hart, 12 plus nine rebounds from David Fraser and 10 rebounds from Kevonte Corley.

Friday for Chattanoog­a State, Taylor scored 22 points, Long had 20 rebounds with 14 points, Johnson also scored 14 and Morris had six assists with 10 points.

› Cleveland State 74, Volunteer State 58: At Cleveland, Victor Curry had 19 points and 11 rebounds, Delaino Walker also had 11 rebounds with 11 points and Josh Parker passed for nine assists as the Cougars improved to 11-9, 7-6 in the TCCAA. Jordan Brown also scored 11 points, and Domont’a’ Wright had 10.

› Cleveland State (w) 75, Volunteer State 60: The third-place Lady Cougars (13-7, 8-5) completed the doublehead­er sweep with Abby Hubert contributi­ng 27 points and 10 rebounds and Ebony Kelley and Keya Jenkins adding 17 and 10 rebounds each and six and four steals. Julia Gaither scored 10 points.

› Valdosta State 81, Lee 70: At Valdosta, Ga., the host Blazers rose to 21-2 and 13-1 in the Gulf South Conference despite a gamehigh 23 points with four 3s from Lee’s Michael McGuirk. Also for the Flames (12-10, 7-8), Ryan Montgomery scored 13 points.

› Valdosta State (w) 67, Lee 62: The Lady Blazers began the GSC sweep by outscoring the Lady Flames 21-11 in the first quarter and stretching their lead to 13 points by halftime. Madi Mitchell and Kenya Samone’ Dixon had 22 and 19 points and nine and 12 rebounds for VSU (16-7, 10-5), while Carrie Cheeks led Lee (18-5, 11-4) with 16 points and seven rebounds and Erin Walsh and Taylor Boggess added 14 and 12 points. Boggess was 4-of-6 on 3s.

› Dalton State 70, Faulkner 69: At Montgomery, Ala., the nationally 11th-ranked Roadrunner­s pulled out a slim Southern States Athletic Conference road win after taking a 35-25 lead into halftime. Both programs have won NAIA Division I national championsh­ips. Carnilious Simmons had 24 points and 14 rebounds and Isaiah Box scored 19 points with four 3s for DSC (19-4, 11-1).

› Bryan 86, Montreat 72: At Montreat, N.C., the Lions beat NAIA Division II’s 25th-ranked Cavaliers with their fourth consecutiv­e Appalachia­n Athletic Conference win. Bryan is 16-9, 10-6 in the AAC.

› Bryan (w) 71, Montreat 54: Seventh-year Lady Lions coach Jason Smith has the most wins in program history, 135, after his AAC leaders rose to 19-6 and 16-3 in the league. Deandra Luna was 4-for-5 on 3s in scoring 19 points, while Keneisha Love scored 11 and Shayla Ludy had nine plus four assists.

› Tennessee Wesleyan 76, St. Andrews 73, OT: At Laurinburg, N.C., Andre AppleWhite had 23 points and 13 rebounds in the Bulldogs’ overtime AAC victory, and Kenny Dean had 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Johnson Decembre and Jalen Oliver scored 12 and 10 points for TWU (9-15, 6-10).

› St. Andrews (w) 67, Tennessee Wesleyan 60: The Lady Bulldogs fell to 16-7, 15-5 in the AAC, but got 16 points and 17 rebounds from Kenzie Conn. Hannah Troutt and Madison Walkup added 13 and 12 points with three and four 3s, plus four assists for Troutt and eight rebounds and three steals for Walkup.

› Covenant 86, William Peace 63: At Raleigh, N.C., Bailey Spragg had 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals as the Scots improved to 12-8, 7-5 in the USA South, with their fourth straight win. James Mitchell scored 15 points with five 3s and Caleb Haynes, Nick Palmer and Will Crumly added 12 apiece, while Berto Dryden had 10 points and four assists and Jared Jauch passed for six assists.

› Covenant (w) 71, Piedmont 58: At Demorest, Ga., the Lady Scots’ fifth win in a row was the program’s first against Piedmont in 15 meetings, dating back to 2009. Kaley Hallmark scored a career-high 22 points with 5-for8 3-point shooting and added 10 rebounds in the USA South victory, while Bekah Walter had 18 points, Jessica Bell 16 points and five assists and Joanna Smith 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
