CFC will host Sounders’ U23s

The Chattanoog­a Football Club announced Wednesday that it will host the Seattle Sounders’ U23 team in its final preseason friendly May 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Finley Stadium. “The Seattle Sounders brand is one of the most recognizab­le in American soccer,” CFC general manager Sean McDaniel said in a release. “Having the future stars of Major League Soccer in our stadium is something special for our players and our fans.” Tickets are available at shop.chattanoog­afc.com, starting at $10; season-ticket holders will have access at no extra cost.

BASKETBALL

› The TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII basketball tournament runs Friday-Tuesday at Chattanoog­a State, and the host teams both are seeded third — behind the Walters State women (25-5, 18-0), the Southwest Tennessee teams and the Motlow State men. Coach Jay Price’s Chattanoog­a State men wound up 19-9 in the regular season, 13-5 in TCCAA play, and Stacey Franklin’s Lady Tigers were 19-10, 11-7 — each program with 10 wins in its last 12 games. Evelyn Thompson’s Cleveland State Lady Cougars (15-10, 10-8) are seeded fifth out of 10 teams, and Lee Cigliano’s Cougars (14-11, 10-8) are the men’s sixth seed. The single-eliminatio­n event starts with men’s play-in games at 2 and 4 p.m. Friday and women’s games at 6 and 8. Saturday will include four men’s games; Sunday, four women’s. Tournament passes cost $20; single-day passes cost $7.

› Dalton State is the No. 2 seed in the Southern States Athletic Conference men’s tournament in Montgomery, Ala. The Roadrunner­s (22-7, 14-4) play today at 3:15 p.m. EST against Martin Methodist, which beat Blue Mountain 74-64 on Wednesday.

RUNNING

› Emily Buwalda and twins Josiah and Justin Brooks will represent Lee University in the NCAA Division II indoor track and field meet March 9-10 in Pittsburg, Kan. Justin will compete in the 400-meter dash with the 12th best time this season among the 18 qualifiers. Josiah will be one of 16 in the triple jump and has the 10th best mark, and Buwalda has the 16th best qualifying time among the 20 in the women’s 800.

› Arts & Sciences senior KiAna Queener signed scholarshi­p papers Wednesday to run cross country for Cleveland State. She already planned to attend Cleveland State for its physical therapy program. When coach David Kyle contacted her, she said, “I was excited.” The 5-foot-4, 89-pound Queener is the granddaugh­ter of a CSCC hall of famer and is “a gifted, natural runner. She has a lot of potential,” CSAS coach Mark Dragoo said. She ran in the state meet the last four years and was a key part of three team region championsh­ips and a runner-up finish. “She’s a great kid and a good student,” Kyle said, “and her best times probably would have her third for us right now.”

TENNIS

› Sewanee junior Jack Gray from Chattanoog­a was the Southern Athletic Associatio­n men’s tennis player of the week. Last weekend he was 3-0 in singles, with two wins over ranked foes, and joined Alejandro Becker in defeating a ranked doubles duo.

LACROSSE

› Lee’s second-year women’s lacrosse team lost 21-10 Wednesday at Young Harris. Kendra Parenteau had eight goals and four assists for Young Harris (4-0). Kaylyn Dillon and Becca Broadwick scored three goals each for Lee (3-2), Dillon with an assist, and Mason Cobb netted two goals.

SOFTBALL

› Cleveland State won 9-4 and lost 5-2 in softball Tuesday at Snead State. The Lady Cougars totaled 16 hits in the win and Shiane Stockwell (5-0) struck out 10 Snead batters. Sadie Coon was 3-for-4, Hailey Galvan had a three-run double and a single, Baylee Woods hit a two-run homer and a single and Macy Bryant also had two RBIs with two hits. Galvan was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the loss.
