Conner’s slam keys UTC split

Ashley Conner’s second grand slam of the young season highlighte­d the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a’s 7-6 softball win over UT-Martin in the Ole Miss Classic on Friday in Oxford, Miss. The Mocs (8-8) totaled 11 hits in that game after managing only three in a 5-2 loss to Saint Louis, when Morgan Kazerooni worked an RBI walk and Halie Williamson added a sacrifice fly for UTC. Devan Brown was 1-for-2 with a double. UTC scored all seven runs against UTM in the second inning, and Alexa Veamoi got the pitching win with four innings of four-hit, scoreless relief. Williamson and Alyssa Coppinger each was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Coppinger adding an RBI.

BASKETBALL

› Dalton State moved on to the championsh­ip game tonight of the Southern States Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament in Montgomery, Ala., with an 80-69 win Friday against No. 3 seed Loyola (La.). Reed Dungan made 12 of 13 free throws and totaled 24 points for second-seeded DSC (24-7), which jumped to a 28-12 lead and had a 32-18 halftime margin. Carnilious Simmons had 16 points and 15 rebounds, Isaiah Box 12 points and four assists and Aaron Burress 10 points for the Roadrunner­s, who face top-seeded William Carey (24-5).

› Bryan College’s second straight appearance in the NAIA Division II women’s basketball tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, begins at 9:30 a.m. EST Wednesday against Indiana Tech, which is 29-4 and ranked ninth nationally, won the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular season and finished second in the WHAC tournament. Bryan (25-9) tied for first in the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference and lost in a playoff with Reinhardt but beat the Eagles in the AAC tourney final. Reinhardt opens play Thursday at 11:15 a.m. EST against Eastern Oregon.

TENNIS

› Sewanee’s 17th-ranked women’s tennis team lost 9-0 Friday to No. 2 Emory at McCallie in the ITA Divison III national indoor tournament and plays No. 11 Washington (Mo.) today at 1 p.m. at Baylor. Washington lost 8-1 to No. 10 Carnegie Mellon. No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer beat No. 13 Johns Hopkins 8-1, and No. 9 Chicago defeated No. 12 Washington & Lee 7-2.

TRACK & FIELD

› Tennessee Wesleyan senior Josh Parson from Rhea County followed up his honor as the AAC men’s track athlete of the year with the USTFCCCA’s similar designatio­n for the NAIA South Region. Parson, who set TWU records this indoor season for the 60- and 200-meter dashes and won both events at the AAC meet, had the best 60 preliminar­ies time Friday in the NAIA nationals in Pittsburg, Kan. Teammate Devonte Fletcher was sixth in the 200 prelims and third in the 400 prelims.

BASEBALL

› Covenant improved to 3-1 in USA South baseball with a 7-4 win Friday at Berea in which Joel Johnson was 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and an RBI and Jonah Carignan doubled twice and matched Donny Lewis with two RBIs. Caleb Bloye was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs for the Scots (5-7 overall). Matt Reitz (2-1) gave up five hits and two earned runs in his seven innings pitched.

LACROSSE

› Tennessee Wesleyan lost 19-5 at Young Harris in women’s lacrosse Friday. Mikayla Virden scored three goals for TWU (3-1), while Kendra Parenteau and Rachel Lepine netted four each for the 5-0 hosts, Parenteau with two assists. The TWU men (2-1) won two days earlier over SUNY-Delhi with three goals and two assists from Dalton O’Connell Zradicka and two goals and an assist by Roderick Williams. Patrick DeMoss made 13 saves.

› McCallie’s lacrosse team hosts Westminste­r today with the hope that spectators bring new children’s shoes as part of the nationwide “Lace Up With Lax” program helping homeless kids from toddlers to teens. There is no admission charge for the 11:30 a.m. junior varsity or 2 p.m. varsity contest at Spears Stadium, but donated shoes will be much appreciate­d.
