UTC women fourth in tourney

SOFTBALL

› Kaleigh Wynne homered and pitched the last four innings, with five strikeouts and three hits allowed, in Chattanoog­a State’s 9-3 softball loss to visiting Motlow State on Monday, and then she went 3-for-4 with the winning RBI in a 5-4 victory in the TCCAA rematch. The other KW for the Lady Tigers (12-6, 3-1), Kayla Woody, was 2-for-4 with an RBI in game one and then 2-for-3 with an RBI. Also in game two, Aimie Davidson batted in two runs and Jenna Edwards was the winning pitcher with four innings of two-hit relief.

› Cleveland State fell to 1-3 in the weekend series and in TCCAA softball play with 3-2 and 10-7 losses Sunday against visiting Roane State. In the first game Sunday, the Lady Cougars (7-6) scored on Hailey Galvan’s home run and Rachel Pierce’s triple, and Baylee Woods and Emily Yell

each went 2-for-3 while Shiane Stockwell

pitched a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts and two earned runs allowed. Michelle Williams and Hannah Walker were a combined 5-for-7 with two runs and an RBI for Roane in that game and Williams had three RBIs in the finale, when only one of the Lady Raiders’ 10 runs was earned. Macy Bryant

and Galvan each was 2-for-4, with three and two RBIs, for Cleveland State.

BASKETBALL

› Covenant College got the USA South team sportmansh­ip award for men’s basketball for the third year in a row. That’s under three head coaches, Neal Young having guided the Scots to an 18-10 record in the 2017-18 season and the USAS tournament championsh­ip game.

BASEBALL

› Covenant freshman Adam Carver was selected the USA South baseball rookie pitcher of the week after getting a save and working 5 1/3 innings with a 0.00 earned run average in the Scots’ 3-1 week. He also took the loss in his only start of the season, but he did not allow an earned run. He is 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA for 9 2/3 innings spanning five appearance­s in 2018.

› Four errors and three unearned runs doomed Bryan College to a 5-4 baseball defeat by visiting Madonna University on Monday. Madonna’s Frankie Lucska was 3-for-4 with a home run. For Bryan (17-3),

Fernando Garcia continued his sizzling season by going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs, and Lake Burris also homered while Rodney Tennie was 3-for-5 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Trevor Behrent was 2-for-4 after hitting a two-run homer in the first game of Saturday’s 14-4, 3-1 sweep of Truett McConnell. Burris had three hits and three RBIs in the first of those two games and went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs in the finale.

LACROSSE

› Sewanee had both Southern Athletic Associatio­n men’s lacrosse players of the week, Thomas Lynde for offense and goalie Bryce Womack, plus the women’s defensive player of the week, Brooke Winfield. In two weekend wins she caused seven turnovers and collected six groundball­s, and she had two assists against Oglethorpe and two goals against Piedmont. Lynde had three goals and three assists in the men’s 13-3 defeat of Transylvan­ia, when Womack made 14 saves with an .824 save percentage.
