UTC’s Woods gets two SoCon honors

University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a senior Megan Woods was doubly honored by the Southern Conference on Wednesday, as both the women’s golfer of the week and the league’s student-athlete of the week, and UTC’s Lake Johnson was the men’s golfer of the week. Woods, an accounting major with a 4.0 grade point average, tied for sixth at 217 as the Mocs finished second in the UNF Collegiate in Jacksonvil­le, Fla. Johnson, a junior from Chattanoog­a Christian, tied for 11th at 213 in Auburn’s Tiger Invitation­al.

› The Dalton State men’s golf team, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, finished third in the 15-team Sand Shark Classic in Okatie, S.C., with a 54-hole 876. No. 8 USC-Beaufort and No. 5 Coastal Georgia shot 869 and 872. DSC’s S.M. Lee was third individual­ly at 214 with P.J. Shields eighth at 217 and Ben Rebne 13th at 219 with a closing 70.

BASKETBALL

› Bryan College lost 76-60 to Indiana Tech on Wednesday in the first game of the NAIA Division II women’s basketball tournament at Sioux City, Iowa. Bryan (25-10) was a sixth seed and got off to a slow start with 1-of-15 shooting in the first quarter and 24.2 percent for the first half, compared to 54.5 percent for its third-seeded opponent. Indiana Tech (30-4) led 23-7 after a quarter and 44-24 at halftime and had all five starters score in double figures. Two reserves led the Lady Lions, Keneisha Love with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and three blocked shots and Tristan McClellan with 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

BASEBALL

› Tennessee Wesleyan won 10-3 Tuesday in NAIA baseball at Mobile but lost 7-2 Wednesday at No. 1-ranked Faulkner. At Mobile (17-3), Aloysious Cruz was 4-for4 with a home run, a triple and four runs scored and Addison Adams was 2-for-3 with two walks and four RBIs for the Bulldogs (10-11). Grant Lang homered and singled and Tristan Clarke and Chris Baetzel each was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Clarke scoring twice. At Faulkner, Collin Ridout was 4-for5 as TWU totaled six hits.

SOFTBALL

› The Tennessee Wesleyan softball team lost 4-3 in eight innings and won 3-2 Wednesday at 16th-ranked Southeaste­rn in Lakeland, Fla., after falling 8-4 and 6-1 the day before at No. 22 Warner. Courtney Black was 3-for-4 with an RBI double and Baylee Sutton tripled and brought in two runs in Tuesday’s first game for TWU (8-6). Wednesday, Briana Muller and Sutton homered in Rachel Mathews’ pitching win, Sutton and Mackenzie Jackson each going 2-for-3. Muller also homered and was 2-for-4 along with Black in the loss, when

Courtney Calkins gave up just five hits and two earned runs in her seven innings.

› Bryan lost 11-1 and 7-4 at home against No. 23 Rio Grande on Tuesday. Sydney Olander had two RBIs in the second game for Bryan (5-13), which has played 10 games against NAIA Top 25 teams.

› ProStar Fastpitch middle infielder

Jenna Mosley learned this week that she is a “Direct Select” choice for the USSSA All-American Games this summer — ProStar’s third such selection in three years. Mosley, a middle schooler who will be a freshman at Trion High this fall but already is on the radar of Southeaste­rn Conference coaches, was told of her selection after a tryout in Hampton, Ga. She gained bigtime attention with her performanc­e in the Scenic City Showcase in early November, according to ProStar chief Steve Chattin.

LACROSSE

› The Sewanee women’s lacrosse team beat Ohio Northern 15-1 Wednesday night for its sixth win in a row. The last five have been by a margin of 88-13. Catherine Crigler, Mary Kate Myers, Anna Comer, Sarah Strand and Alden Woodford scored two goals each, Crigler and Myers with an assist apiece, and Grace Zechman had three assists.

› Eighth-ranked Siena Heights won 17-13 in an NAIA women’s showdown Tuesday at No. 5 Tennessee Wesleyan. The 2-0 visitors scored the first five goals, but TWU (3-2) got within 13-12 with 6:53 to go. Margaret Waite scored four goals and Taylor Minauskas and Mikayla Virden netted three each in defeat.
