Softball Mocs lose, win games in Florida

The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a softball team opened play Friday in the USF Under Armour Invitation­al in Clearwater, Fla., with a 3-1 loss to Central Florida and a 6-3 win over Central Michigan.

Katie Corum, Brook Womack and Hayleigh Weissenbac­h hit home runs for the Mocs (9-13) against CMU, and Allison Swinford (4-3) got the pitching win with Alexa Veamoi recording her third save. Weissenbac­h was 4-for-7 in the two games, Amanda Beltran was 3-for-5 and Womack went 3-for-6 with three RBIs.

Beltran was 2-for-2 in the win with Womack and Emma Sturdivant each going 2-for-3.

Celie Hudson was the hard-luck pitching loser against UCF. UTC’s Aly Walker scored in the first inning when Amanda Conner’s single got past the right fielder.

› Chattanoog­a State 12-21, Roane State 0-0: At Harriman, Tenn., Kaleigh Wynne and Jenna Edwards pitched five-inning one-hitters with nine and five strikeouts and Kiley Longmire was 6-for-7 with four home runs, one a grand slam, and 10 RBIs in the TCCAA sweep for the Lady Tigers (14-9, 5-1).

Longmire was 4-for-4 with four RBIs in game one, when Alyssia Bowen was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored and Katie Cheeseman was 3-for-3 and also scored three times.

Madison Crabtree and Kayla Woody each was 2-for-3 with a double in game two, Woody also with a homer and two RBIs and Crabtree with a sacrifice fly and three RBIs.

› Mississipp­i College 1-2, Lee 0-11: At Clinton, Miss., the Lady Flames bounced back from a tough-luck loss to romp in the second Gulf South Conference game. They now are 12-12, 5-6 in the GSC.

› Covenant 8-6, Huntingdon 2-4: At Montgomery, Ala., the Lady Scots won in nine and eight innings and are 11-1, 3-1 in the USA South. After Sarah Huskey pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts, Carsyn Stone and Joni Johnson combined on a seven-hitter, also with six strikeouts.

Shelby Ralston was 2-for-5 with a three-run double and a run scored in the six-run ninth in game one, when Shannon Schmitt also had two hits and Faith Manning had two RBIs. Shade Epes was 2-for-5 and scored in the rematch, while Kirsten Aanensen scored twice and Manning had the deciding two-run double. Covenant scored three in the seventh to tie.

› Centre 15-4, Sewanee 5-5: At Sewanee, Tenn., the host Tigers salvaged a Southern Athletic Associatio­n split with Jackie O’Reilly going 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs, three runs scored and the pitching win and Rachel Hoffman going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Taylor Wagner singled in O’Reilly with the winning run in the seventh.

Katie Bender was 2-for3 with two RBIs in the loss for Sewanee (2-9, 1-4), and Hoffman, Townsend and Caroline Sweetin each had two hits and scored a run.

› Montreat 7-7, Bryan 2-6: At Montreat, N.C., the hosts dropped the Lady Lions to 5-15, 2-2 in the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference.
